Default Mayatan

Went on a trip west On Sunday to Mayatan 2 other party's fishing just out from boat launch. Myself and Oldguy decided to treck across small bay out from launch? Really bad idea 2\3 of the way across I broke through the top layer of flood water and ice and found myself in about 18 inches of water then triped and was now in the water up to my waist got up and with difficulty got off the lake, good thing it was above frezzing!! So Ice report? slush-floodwater 4 inches of poor whiteice food water between layers with a few good inches of black clear ice. This is what we were told by the litter bugs who were fishing near boat launch, as I never got to drill a hole. Star and Jackfish some fishing going on near shore with flood water on both.

Hi Guys and gals, I read a few pages back but could not find too much info about wabamun. I am new to ice fishing and unsure of ice conditions....

I drilled a hole Dec 7 near south seba. Was about 2" of ice then 2" of slush then about 5" of ice. 9" total but it did not looks like great ice to me (but I really don't know what I am looking at. I only walked out to about 80 yards where I know it is 40" deep.....

I was back out on Dec 14 and I did not see anyone on the lake, not even a snowmobile track (that I noticed) and I can see a big chunck of the west end on the lake from my living room.

Just wondering if it is safe to take a snowmobile on the lake and do some fishing?

Thanks

Out there yesterday. No access to lake. Major snow drift. Definitely only walkin from the main road or snowmobile access.

Default Badger

14" - 16" at the North access point on badger. Good, solid, clear ice. Some drove on, some didn't. Some small pressure ridges forming on the north end with about a 2" - 3" differential in ice layer height as of December 17th.

Wondering what the ice is like out there. Would like to go next weekend (on north side, Sunbreaker cove). Never been out there in winter...not sure what the lake is like this time of year.

Anyone on here from the Athabasca area? What's the ice like? Going there Boxing day, just wondering if I should take fishing gear.

The perch were small and it was cold out lol.
People were driving on the ice with vehicles but I was not one of them.

Alberta Beach today, lots of snow and around 6-8" slush with 14" of ice. Found one spot with no slush and it was a solid 14". Never caught anything but it was my first time on that lake, gull and wab to come this week.

We were out at Beaver Mines yesterday, 10" - 12" of partically snow covered ice. Fishing was a little slow, although we did manage a few.

Ghost Reservoir/River

Fished from 2-7pm on friday, lots of snow so we stayed close to the launch in shallow water. Ice was 10-12" thick and solid, maybe an inch of white ice af worst. We took a quad on but some people were driving 4x4 SUVs. At least a foot of snow on the ice but very little floodwater where we fished, didn't check the main body of the lake.

The best news is I caught a fish. It was just a small burbot right at the end of the day but I finally left Ghost without a skunk.

Default Wabamun Lake Report Dec 22nd 2013

Hey guys, I was out on wab at townsite all day sunday , The ice was great ,

3 " of white Ice
3 " of Hollow Empty Watery/Slushie Ice
3 " of Good Black Ice

I would never dare, But I did see a lot of people driving on the ice with full size trucks,

I seen the trucks drive on no problem, However , My buddys quad went thru twice !

Be careful out there and take caution !

Was at Swan Lake most of the day yesterday - 10-12 FOW - 13" thickness, 1/2 solid black 1/2 white. No floodwater where we were straight out from the boat launch but more to the centre and west end of the lake had a couple inches of ice, few inches of water then ice again.

As per Swan protocol - skunked.

Cheers.

Default Buffalo lake report

After a long, and I mean very long weekend on buffalo I figured I had better do a little update. On the south side it seems there are people accessing the lake from scenic sands, or twp 4-10 off of hiway 21 this may be limited due to drifting snow. On the north side access is very limited and when you do get to the lake foot travel is best. There is 12-14" of decent solid ice with many open flowing holes and anywhere from 1-1.5' of top water depending on the weather. Scary conditions that need to be traveled with caution. Good luck to all of you, be safe.
