Default Alan baker r.i.p.

Saddly this morning I found out that Alan Baker passed away late last week.

Anyone in the gunsports in Edmonton over the last 30 years knew Alan. He always took time with new shooters and hunters to explain anything that they wanted to know. I thought everyone should know. It is my understanding that there was not and will not be a service

I don't now what else to say, except I will miss him.

Default Miss you Dad

Well I see that some of you here knew my biological Father. He passed on April 11,2010. For those of you who did know him/know of him here is an exerpt from his memorial service. I'll forgive Ackley Abe for spelling his name wrong

In Memorium
Allen Dale Baker
December 02, 1945-April 11, 2010

Alllen Baker, along time member of the Sherwood Park Fish and Game association, passed away April 11, 2010.

Al was a Father, grandfather, friend, hunter, fisherman, outdoor enthusiast and a mentor to hundreds of sportsmen

An anchor in the retail firearms and sporting industry his tenure was vast from Wholesale Sports, Phoenix Gun Range, Klondike Arms and Edmonton Sporting Goods. It is impossible to sum up the qualities of one man who touched so many lives, from ensuring you received your Alberta Hunters Education Course, Firearms License and then helping you with your first firearm purchase.

With his wealth of knowledge he was only eager to give advise and help. He was the true teacher and mentor. As an avid sportsman he was keen to partake in all of nature's bounties. Whether stalking that trophy white tail-with his trusty .270 to exterminating gophers at long distance.

Al's ability to guide, teach and mentor his fellow sportsmen with his vast knowledge and experience was much appreciated by all.

Al won't track the big one on the trusty trail, pull the trophy walleye from the hike at the lake, or tell tales around the campfire, but one thing is for sure, he will be with each and every sportsman who he talked stories with, gave advise, or simply just listened to.

You will be sorely missed, but not forgotten.

At Al's request there was no service. Anyone who wished to do so was directed to Alberta Fish and Game Association.
__________________________________________________ ______________

My Father had been part of the "Gun Scene" in Edmonton and Alberta for many years. He was one of the guys I truly looked up to for advise. We were shocked when he was pre-deseased by his close friend and co-worker Doug Hill, another one of the fine folks who taught alot of us many things.

Dad you would be glad to know that even in your passing. Your trusty Carl Gustav .270 was put into service this past season by my Step-Son. He managed to down his first ever deer with it....when my Son is old enough he will also take his first deer with that rifle and your legacy will continue.

RIP

Lefty

Your father was a die hard .270 fan all his life.

He not only spoke highly of the .270, but had an impressive list of animals to back up the caliber's capabilities.

It is good he passed on what I think was his favourite gun to his kids.

My favorite gun....you guessed its my .270 wonder where I got that from??? lol. I only wish I was right handed.....but it is nice to pass it along to the kids. My plan is that that rifle will take "something" every year if I have anything to say about it, even a supplemental doe tag in my pocket will do. I'll have to get used to the bolt on the wrong side but I know it will work....

Your dad used to make fun of me for being left handed, but he never mentioned his son being left handed. He probably would have blamed your left handedness on mom's side of the family.

One other thing, I can remember your dad talking about his first hunt with you , or your first deer, and he was darn friggen proud of you.

He probably never mentioned that to you though.

Yah I was the difficult one when it came to guns, and yes I know you knew my Dad well by your comment about blaming the "leftiness" on my Mom's side lol.

Yah he was never an openly affectionate Father but I knew he meant well. Unfortunately when Dad was diagnosed with neuropathy he wasn't able to get out hunting and he had to live vicariously through his friends and my stories.

Thanks Tree, Dad passed a year ago (on April 11, 2010). I still run into guys who weren't aware of it. So I thought I would share in a little AO tribute 1 year after his passing, honestly just typing up his memorium brought back a tonne of memories.....

GreyLynx,

That didn't happen to be your Heym in .300 winchester I bought a few years back would it? My Dad was always on the lookout with his left-handed buddies and let me know if they were selling anything.

Regards,
Lefty

Hey Lefty, I used to go visit your Dad at Phoenix half a lifetime ago, liked and respected the man. I still walk into Wholesale looking for him.

Sorry for your loss Sir, Al is missed.

Thank you. I miss both him and Doug....I find if I go into Wholesale half the time I wander around aimlessly then leave.....I only know a couple guys in there now and I have to one to talk to when I go in there.

I used to walk in there to see Dad and BS with the old boys, people used to only want to deal with him and Doug when they went in. Met a tonne of great guys that way. Dad would always introduce me and who ever he was talking to by first name, likely I have met many of the folks here without knowing it!

6 years ago now my biological father passed away. Although at times we were not close he had a large influence in my obsession and addiction to hunting and shooting sports.
