9,000 walleye licences available for three Alberta lakes
Edmonton... Approximately 9,000 walleye licences are available for Alberta
anglers at Pigeon Lake, Wolf Lake (near Bonnyville) and Lake Newell through
the Special Walleye Licence pilot program. These are left over from the draw
on April 20 and will be available for reservation by phone starting May 4 at
8:15 a.m.
The licences will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. May 24
will be the last day to reserve them. Most of these licences are for Pigeon
Lake. To find where licences are available, call 1-877-289-0999 during
business hours, starting April 27.
An angler can reserve a walleye licence by phoning the reservation support
line at 1-900-451-3729 ($1.25 per minute). Anglers must be prepared to enter
their Wildlife Identification Number, which can be purchased at any licence
issuer, and the draw code for lake and class of walleye desired. Limit is
one licence per applicant. Once reserved, the licence may be purchased at an
issuer as soon as the next day.
The special walleye season starts May 8 on Lake Newell, May 18 on Pigeon
Lake and June 1 on Wolf Lake. Fishing ends for all three lakes on September
3. Three classes of walleye are available for harvest under the special
licence: Class A, two walleye larger than 50 cm; Class B, three walleye 43
to 50 cm; and Class C, three walleye smaller than 43 cm.
Last year, the province ran a partial program, which has been expanded this
year to allow Albertans more opportunities to keep walleye they catch. This
year, more than 28,000 fish are available to anglers for the three pilot
lakes combined.
All anglers are reminded to follow the regulations for the specific water
body they plan to fish. It is essential to handle fish carefully to maximize
survival where catch-and-release fishing regulations apply or when anglers
choose to release fish by choice. Anglers are also reminded only barbless
hooks can be used in Alberta. For more information on fishing opportunities

Providing opportunities for anglers is part of the Alberta government's
commitment to improve Albertans' quality of life. In addition to
recreational benefits, angling contributes more than $400 million annually
to Alberta's economy.
