I had one guy come up to me on the South Ram a few years back. Just a brief "hey, how is it going? You catching anything..blah blah". Then proceeds to head upstream of me. I was maybe 2 pools up river so far. Okay...that was the way I was heading. I did decide though to pick up in a bit and head upstream. Within a few yards he suddenly picked up and moved up to the next pool. Hmm, okay.
This repeated again in 15 or 20 mins when I tried moving upstream again. Okay, clearly he is not going to let me go past even though he passed me. So I decided to test that theory and kept heading up within minutes of stopping at the next pool. He absolutely kept ahead of me. I kept pushing faster and faster and he kept moving ahead. Eventually both of us were no longer really fishing and fast hiking upstream. Eventually he runs into "the gap" where you cannot get past. I catch up and him and he is huffing bad. I say, "in a bit of rush are you?". I'm expecting a rebutt... He says "Naw, just getting exercise (ya right!)". He leaves and heads back down - still huffing and puffing.
I followed back down but in less of a rush and caught some decent fish on the way. I eventually caught up to another angler coming upstream. He had his wife and a nice dog with him. The dog comes up to me right away, I ask if it is okay to pet the dog and he says no problem. I even get my face licked. Nice dog! I ask him if he saw this other guy that was headed back down as well. He looks at me and frowns a bit and says yeah, "my dog went haywire when he approached and I had to hold the dog back who was barking and growling like crazy..." He then said "I think the guy was a total __hole". I laughed and told him my experience. He said, "See, animals can tell"
Pretty much that is how it went down.
