Depends on the lake, usualy maggots works the best and minnows catch the hogs but a perch eye is harder to steal and works almost as good. Lately I've been using a bait I found in a book called "fishing tips and tricks" quite often, you scale the white belly and cut out a small piece. Usualy works about as good as anything else and it stays on the hook all day. Often I find the key to getting a good perch catch is getting your hook back down the hole as fast as possible when the big ones are moving through and this bait speeds up that process. Fish a Swedish pimple with a Russain hook or wire worm tied 6" up from it dropshot style, bait both with a chunk of perch belly, gets to the bottom fast and never needs to be rebaited, catches the aggressive ones and the not so aggressive ones. Now somebody tell me this is illegal and get it over with since that seems to be the real point of this thread.

The majority of the time I'll use maggots, and the color will depend on the body of water being fished.

Usually I use perch eyes...if available ...but also have used the belly as well with success on both fronts...one time I think it was around Xmas one year...I used pieces of green jujubes that worked wonders as well...

Try shrimp. Caught tons this way, if you buy them in a bag let them freezer burn a little and they'll stay on the hook pretty good.
