i think you were using a live whitefish for bait and that pike swallowed it too deep.( probably because you were 100 yards away setting your 8th tip-up when it hit your bait.).......... kidding, nice pics, love the mink and owl.

With my vast fishing experience I have learned that a rod holder does not fit down a 10" hole. Please further my knowledge with your stupidity.

well genius, you forget on a very warm day holes tend to open up, a 10 inch ring fits nicely down an enlarged 10 inch hole, hence the anchor, plus theres always the chance of a fish big enough to bend the holder in a worst case scenario. did you understand that word, scenario???

Great pics Wayne. Wonder if someone has ever had a rod come out of a holder and go down a hole. I know a few people it's happened to.

thats the first thing that came to my mind. I know one of my rod holders if knocked over, will let the rod slide out. usually just pack snow around it. gonna have to try that ice screw idea! Great idea and pics WC

I usually stick my fingers deep in the gills and wiggle them around to help stimulate blood flow before releasing. Not sure if thats how you do it too, but it's to kill them? Hmm, maybe I need to find some new information on how to handle fish!!

Quite an interesting scenario. I forgot that you fish for 1000lb great whites with cable.. I dont fish for pike with rods, waste of time. Tipups catch the big ones, as you have proved!

wouldnt know, I hate handlining, doesnt seem like fishing to me, and my big ones are caught with rod and reel, so far anyways. but you would know that of course. personally I dont think you fish for anything other than comments, I doubt you get far enough from your moms basement.

Default Always tied down

Everyone that fishes with me except Wayne laughs when my rods are anchored down as well. Had one slip out at Cvr several years back and learned my lesson. Besides real men catch big fish with real fishing rods. I hope you are the only one in the summer that fishes with a tip up or maybe you really do have and use a real rod......

It almost happened to me at Bear Lake near Edson. The rod holder was bent right over! And the only thing that saved my pike setup was being there in just the nick of time and kicking slush into the hole.

Also: Awesome pics Wayne!

Nice pics Wayne.

I seen that sky crane at the Lethbridge Airport the other day while on my way back in from checking out the open water at Ridge. The thing is huge and I was wondering what it was doing down here in the south.

Let me know when the ice is gone from Newel and I will try to bring my boat up there for a day on the water. It will be good to try and get out for some eyes while everywhere else is closed. Fishing without the bait will be a good adventure for me and hopefully I learn a few things while trying it out.

I'm with you Wayne and Gringo, I have rods and tip-ups packed in my bag and always gravitate to using the rods more than the tip-ups. In my hands, I tend to be more successful with the rods, but I am sure there are just as many who do better with tip-ups. Whatever works in your own hands.

Great pictures. That pike looks pretty fat from that whitefish!

BTW I don't know much about burbs. How hard do you have to squeeze them to get the eyes to bulge like that?
JK of course.

Nice pics... the owl is a great sighting.

As far as rods and holders.... I have a nice Rapala ice combo and a red metal holder somewhere at the bottom of Hanmore Lake. I was dinking around with a tip-up, then I looked over my shoulder and seen the holder tip over, the rod slide towards the hole and the whole works went down....

Just a heads up to the guys talking about rod holders...wayne has one like this...it locks into place if a fish hits it and prevents it from going down the hole.

the ones like these...

are junk and will eventually get pulled down the hole by a fish (as other posters have already mentioned!)

You obviously have not fished enough with us and get creative with the piece of "JUNK". Many of us use them and have them mounted on a piece of wood that works quite well by the way, and won't get sucked down the hole either..........
