Default Need some help with old fly rod

I was given this fly rod about 35 years ago. I think it was old then??

It's a "Howald WonderRod" by shakespeare.

It's 3 peice. Rough guess 8 foot long all together??

Say on the butt Model FAH

I'm not a fly fishing guy.. But I was wanting to use the rod to try fly fishing. Ideally for pike. Would this be a bad idea with the rod?

It has very little sentimental value to me, but I don't want to wreck it by using the wrong tool for the wrong job.

I don't think it has any $$ value either, but still don't want to wreck it.

Woudl using it to start fly fishing for pike be a bad idea? If not, what reel, line weight etc should I get for pike? I know I have to decide underwater or top water.. I'm guessing underwater streamers??

Thanks!

I think this is the same rod.. https://www.fishingtalks.com/how-muc......-45085.html

That is a glass rod and perfect for horsing pike and bass out of the weeds!
I would fish that rod in a heartbeat!

I am going to assume it's a 7/8 weight?
a weight forward floating or sink tip ( depending on where you are fishing)line with a mono leader about 4 feet will be fine, but it would be best to start a thread asking for help around where you live, hopefully another long rod fisherman will hook up with you and show you the ropes!

Were you located? I have line weights from 1>9 on reels. We could perhaps fit one.
