Default The Stash These Jays Must Have

I fill this everyday and they empty it everyday. The stash they must have would be incredible lol. They eat some on the fence but most of the time take the peanuts somewhere and are back in a few minutes.

I also have a male and female downy woodpecker that visit daily.

Pictures are ones my neighbor took for me

They are a handsome bird, highly entertaining as well. Thanks for the photos.

I've seen them stashing in a tree before, but the one I currently have usually just grabs a bit and fly to their spot under the window to avoid the resident woodpecker, eats, and repeats.

Yes they do stash food, my neighbor down from us found a stash one year. Said he saw them flying into his shed and found about 800 peanuts

Can find them at Canadian tire, amazon, anywhere that sells bird feeders most of the time. Wood peckers like them to

Ah yes the peanut smorg, those rascals will put you in the poor house given the cost of peanuts these days. I have been holding off putting mine out till the cold weather hits, for now they are on sun flower seeds. The feeders can be found at Peavy Mart and also the peanuts to fill them. The Blue Jays add such a splash of color around the place in the winter months I can justify the outlay. D.H.

The wife wrapped ours with packing tape to limit the size of the holes that the jays can get the peanuts out of. Still only lasts two days when she fills it up. We must have had 5 or 6 jays at a time last time she had it out.

Yeah, we had to do something. A pack of determined birds can empty the feeder in a couple hours if you don’t.

I put shelled peanuts in this feeder, but I'd bet that unshelled ones would be okay, too. The woodpeckers love it and it slows down the beautiful, but piggy, bluejays. It seemed small to me at first, but it does take some time for the birds to empty it. I bought it on Amazon.

Search for "Peanut Wreath". Took me a while to figure out what they were called.

I have two neighbours that feed the blue jays shelled peanuts all year round,
They also complain that their gutters are always plugged with peanut shells.
I have a couple bird seed feeders but only use them in the winter

The same 4 jays I get take them to store them somewhere but also stop and eat the odd one on the fence as im sure flying all day storing them takes energy lol.

I like having them around, they are entertaining aswell.

T-Bug ... I had one of those peanut feeders and gave it away, we had 6 Jay's clean it out in about an hour, they were hiding them under leaves, in flower pots & the rain gutters. Then the M-Pie's moved in and started cleaning up/out their stash ... that was the end of the feeder.

Found an alternative at Peavey Mart that all the birds enjoy, it's called a Nutsie Nut Cake 2.5 lb, SKU 285696 for $16.00. Rather than buying the wire cage to hold them, I made one from stucco wire, the Blue Jays still come & we have 3 different variety's of wood peckers that visit almost every day, including Mr. Pileated.

Cheers

D.

Some people consider them pests, they drive away other birds and their cry is hardly pleasing to the ear. Too bad we don't have Steller s jays here.

We get them everyday and they seem fine with other species being in the area and feeders. Just the other day the woodpecker was hanging from the bottom of the feeder and the blue jay working it on the top.
