Default Sucker on the fly

Got a surprise the other day playing around with the Goldeye and landed this in. Caught suckers before but this was a bigger one approx. 20 plus inches. I only half scooped him to shore and took a couple crappy pics (by myself again no friends) and let him swim off. Was definitely a different fight than the goldeye where.

My question is this a Red Tail? not Red because of the season?

Not a sucker specialist but I believe it's a red horse sucker. Don't think we have red tails in alberta. What did you catch him on? I've heard they are a strongman fighter

On a sink tip black sparkle bugger. Non bead head.

Yes he fought hard - one of the few times I had to use my reel to play him.

By the looks of the anal fin I think it is a White Sucker...I catch them quite often on the fly rod while fishing for whitefish, trout and goldeye.

Awesome I've been meaning to try out the nsr for a while now!
Well on my fly rod anyways

As for goldeye and suckers can I use bite tippet like I use for pike or would they spook seeing that?

I use regular 3x tippet looped on to my sink tip about 18 inches long. The odd fish will bite through and break off but I think it gives a better presentation than a wire leader.

That's awesome! Some elitists might turn their noses up at that, but I think that's an awesome catch

Thanks. I love trout fishing in rivers and streams all the same but when you have a resource like this so close to home I can't pass it up plus it is a different challenge to catch these in comparison.

I can't help but ask, did it eat the sparkle bugger or just get hooked in the snout?

Most get hooked right in the snout like they nibble at it and are not sure.i still lose more hooks in trees than bite offs.

I could be wrong but that looks like one of those illegally stocked Prussian carp. There have been reports of them in the NSR. Can't really tell from the pictures though.

definitely not a prussian carp. Please don't kill if you're not sure!
