The one fellow who I believe was BSing through his teeth would keep coming around to hunters that kill just legal sheep. In between denying having anything to do with this. He said he had a buddy who killed a sheep every two years, the first legal sheep he saw. Some times a good sheep sometimes too small/young in this fellows eyes. It didn't matter to him. In his off years he helped others get sheep, the guy is a sheep machine and lives for those high up vistas. We went round and round on what he felt was wrong with this but if I was a betting man I'd say I was talking with the fellow who wrote the AFGA resolution. I could be wrong but that is what my gut said. Ive had a very strong feeling right from the start that this resolution was personal between a couple of guys and I believe that more than ever.
Wild Sheep has done much good and the fellows I talked with were looking pretty tired from all the work in the up coming dinner. I just hate when a few people can decide that they have the right rewrite the rules for everyone without consulting their members. When it comes to the decisions that Wild Sheep Alberta makes in regards to Alberta sheep the ONLY voices that should count are Alberta voices. I don't care what their head office thinks and not paying attention to the Alberta voice can see them head down the same trail RMEF took.

Hopefully one day (soon) we will be able to get to the bottom of where this BS came from. Nobody wants to stand up and take responsibility for it. Everyone is being sheepish with comments towards it. If this was dreamt up by the Alberta Wild Sheep I don’ feel so proud of being a member of their organization anymore. Like you said its crap that they are using the AFGA to do their dirty work.

If I were a member of that zone I would be doing some long and hard thinking about who are the executive and what are their motives for being there.
When the organized outfitters wanted to push through the allocated licences for personal profiteering they knew that with the resistance they had from other outfitters there was no way to convince the gov't without having the main voice on side - the AFGA. Once they gained control of the AFGA executive the proposal came off the back burner.
This is a similar tactic to try and show support from the resident hunter for an ill-founded plan.
PS- There is your conspiracy theory SH

I’m not so sure you are that far off with PART of your conspiracy theory.
Of all the clubs and members I have questioned in the past two weeks nobody wants to stand up and say yes it was me! You are right the resolution was submitted by AFGA Zone 1, not a club.

WILDLIFE RESOLUTION NUMBER W-3-2010
Submitted by: Zone 1
Drafted by: Zone 1
Trophy Sheep Licenses
BE IT RESOLVED THAT the waiting period for a hunter who has harvested a trophy sheep to purchase another trophy sheep license be increased from one year to five years.
BRIEF: This change would eliminate those hunters who shoot younger rams every second year. If they knew they could only shoot a ram every five years, they would be more selective. This would also allow a wider range of hunters to harvest a ram.

Anyone know the appropriate contacts and addresses for AFGA and Alberta Wild Sheep to send a letter to regarding these resolutions? Please post them up here. I suggest writing a letter requesting a written response from these groups, c.c. letter to SRD. No matter what reponse is given, this will give the Albeta public some legal documentation as to their position. Time to put the pressure on these groups to be open with their intentions.

I'm sure there are Game Club executives here that have the ablilty to get in touch with the right people in these organizations.

This change is the best way to control the hunters and not the problem. If the problem is the amount of younger rams getting shot by the same people then make it a lifetime # or 1 or 2 4/5 curl and then a full curl. The five year change just stops the hunter that likes to be out there for that chance of a big one after he shoots his first legal one.
What do I know though?

I wanted so badly to attend conference as a voting delegate and stand on the floor to argue this resolution. My club could only send one delegate and a good fellow was already signed up. There is a Wild Sheep banquet coming up in Red Deer I believe it is March 20th. That would be a good place to make your voice heard.

First it must be voted on at conference next week. SRD has seen the proposed resolutions though.

209 who taught you how judge sheep? Some guys out there heve no way to learns these things other than a crappy little drawing the the hunting regs. It does nothing to show the best ways to line up a ram in profile. You may not even know. Im sure it wouldnt be a huge expenditure and that if guys are gunna spend thousands of dollars on going on a sheep hunt, they shouldnt worry about a small price for an education coaurse. Sure not everyone will learn lots from this but there isnt one guy on this forum that knows it all. Maybe everyone here would learn one little thing that would help them out.You guys have harped on how many new guys come into sheep hunting, well why not give them the opertunity to head into the field with as much knowledge as possible. There is lots that could be discussed such as legal curl (full and 5/4) and how the best ways to veiw this are and why the other ways dont work, which could be demonstrated on true mounts, there could be a squaring presentation by F+W so that guys understand this process as even most guys that have harvested rams have no idea what they do, maybe a little better zone definations for all areas there are many things that could be of benifit to some people that are not as seasoned as guys such as yourself.
You dont wanna loose opertunity and thats good so why not help out the new comers and many guys that have been trying how to do things properly so they can make the best of their oppertunity!!

Yes there are two ministers tags. One is auctioned at Fnaws Conference in the US and the other is raffled off through tickets here in Alberta.
they got 208,000 for the tag this year at the auction.

[QUOTE=sheepguide;508992]209 who taught you how judge sheep?

You may as well quit directing comments at 209. He has you on ignore and doesn't see anything you post. That's why he hasn't responded to any of your posts for the past while.

Thanks Rocky and 209.

Having any written response when discussing issues at meetings can help focus the discussion. I can't make the Banquet, maybe someone else here will take the ball with them and play catch.

I find the structure of AFGA and affiliated clubs frustrating, in regards to resolutions and voting. Comments reserved for a new thread.

Dale, Please keep me posted with any responses you receive. I will be attending both the AFGA confrence next week and the AWS banquet in March.

Hopefully we get a bunch of people emailing the people I have listed above.

Thats fine he has pretty much ignored everything that anyone has directed towards him that requires him to cover one of his responses. I may not always be right and some guys totaly disagree but at least I will try and justafy and answer anything directed my way.

But ill still direct stuff his way as its a valid statment towards an idea he did nothing but bad mouth. He is a smart guy i would hope and may not respond but I guarentee he reads my posts and that some of what I state makes him think twice about some things he says.

Does anyone know who in Zone 1 brought this resolution forward?, they might be good to add to your mailing list if you're writing letters.

Rocks, I was told it came from Willow Valley but the fellow who told me would not offically confirm that. I have to repect his wishes.

That seems to be the million dollar question.
Two of the suspected involved clubs that I have contacted both deny it and point the finger at the other.

So what is it with sheep and sheep hunters? Most threads get resolved and peter out in a few pages. Sheep threads go on 17, 20, 24 pages (and that's just with the usual 4 or 5 guys arguing)! Continued exposure to thin air at high altitudes have some sort of impact on brain cells?

Just kidding... sorta

I dont agree that this is the best first step but wouldnt it make more sense that if this is the way they want to or decide to go that there should be an age stipulation in this.

Not going with my personal opinion here but if they feel that to many younger rams are being shot wouldnt it make sense to give the guys shooting rams that are older a bit of a break.

Maybe it would be better to wait until that second ram is shot. If you shoot 2- 5 1/2 year old rams then you have a very large wait. Gives guys the chance to harvest a younger legal first ram then from there they decide what they want. If they wanna take the wait time then go ahead and shoot that second young ram. If you want to hunt every second year make the decision to shoot an older ram.

Just an idea so relax I never stated that there is a problem!!

It truly depends on what the actual intent was.

If you don't know it is probably unlikely anyone here could explain it to you.

whether its a problem or not I read that they wanna stop guys shooting a young ram every 2 years.
So to me guys such as 209 that have harvested old rams should be the ones not affected here.
And to set the wait time after the harvest of the first ram doesnt target just the repeat young ram shooters.

It's ok, I get the passion. I'm just amused they go on so. But you sheep guys enjoy it so that's cool.
