Default Pepper Spray

I was telling a buddy that I carry pepper spray in the winter as I had a cougar jump out about ten feet in front of me on the yamnuska trail and I was lucky that it took off. He said that if the pepper spray was cold it would not work. Does anyone know anything about this..I was also wondering that if they pepper spray was left in the truck for several days of minus 20 weather if it was any good any more even if you took it in the house and thawed it out.

If you keep the canister on your person and dont allow it to freeze, it will be ok. If you leave it in the truck at minus 30 the propellant will freeze and it will not work.

Just keep it close to your body and it should be fine.

Have you ever tried using a can of shaving gel that travelled in a gear bag in the back of a truck during the winter? Doesn't work so well.

If you'd paid attention in physics class in high school (if you got that far), and learned Boyle's Law, then it wouldn't be any mystery that as temperatures drop, so does the partial pressures of gasses. Duh! For the same reason that spray-paint cans explode when you throw them into the campfire. Whee!!.. . isn't that fun!!

nitrogen propelled sprays will work to -50 c. other than that you'd be s.o.l.
