What to do when your hole is too small
A friend of mine told me she was caught a 17lb pike but she only had a small auger. What can you do when this happens. I am going fishing at snipe this weekend and i was thinking of bringing a chizel with me to make the hole bigger. Another thing i was wondering was how did the natives drill holes in the ice.

Well aside from buying a new auger blade.. You can drill figure 8 ....this usually works well... i do it from time to time when i fish whites ... its like watching Hi-Def Widescreen fish tv... ... i had it happen to me about 7-8yrs back when fishing for pike i couldnt get him tho a 6 inch hole ...so i hooked a chain tho his mouth then drilled another hole right beside the other one.. worked pretty good... but a real pain in the ass....

Well if you can get the head up enough through the hole , then get your buddy to bonk him between the eyes a couple of times , tie a rope through his gills , anchor it to the ice , and then you have the rest of the day to chisel the hole bigger without fear of losing the fish , sounds good aye.

Thats ridiculous. What if you can't or don't want to keep the fish?? Just because it's a big fish doesn't mean it needs to be kept. Thats probably not the best option.
Drill holes side by side. That's the best bet.

Buy a chainsaw. You can have any size hole you want.

Does it really work?
Does drilling a second hole really work? Firstly how do you avoid nicking the line that is down the first hole? And when you are done I'd think the 2 holes would form something like a figure 8 (when viewed from above) meaning that the fish would need to squeeze part of his body thru the narrow part before he'd fit into the 2nd hole? If you can reach the fish to put a chain thru his lip I'd think you could pull (extrude?) him thru the first hole (even if it's a tight squeeze).
Thankfully I've never had this concern, I catch all my big fish in the summer.

use a 4" auger, and drill a bunch of holes in a box pattern, then push or pull the 'plug' out of the way before you start.
Or buy an 8" auger for $75.00

Couple of years ago, Duster hooked a 20lber, the rig had been down all day and the holes got small, we drilled one next to it, I ended up reaching my arm down 2feet of ice and grabbed her by the bottom lip, she clamped onto my hand and we got her up. Pretty scary feeling around blind, couple lacerations, noting super glue couldn't fix lol~!!
But hey Gibson, I thought you always used the biggest holes possible
