Ice is off Dolberg
Dad and I went to Dolberg yesterday, ice is off the lake. Caught some fish, no biggies, lots of hits. Big bombers coming off the lake, but not in numbers; we're either early or late (I suspect a bit early). Lots of swimming boatmen.
Fishin' Buddy said surface temps of 52oF. Thought the water is colder myself, but that's only a surface temp reading.
Classic springtime flies worked; leeches, chronomids, and backswimmers.
Cool biological moment is I've never been to this lake this early; on the far side by the beaverdam, there was quite a bit of "low pitched chatter" along the shoreline. Dad and I thought long and hard, as it became fairly apparent this wasn't birds. So we came up with mating frogs. Quite a ruckus!
Good fishing,
Smitty
