Default Mystery Species Identification

Friend of a friend out in Montreal allegedly caught this on the St. Lawrence few years ago. I should have posted sooner but forgot about it. No idea what the heck it is. Any armchair Biologists out there who can identify this really peculiar oddity of a fish? I would have been shocked to death to see this come up out of the hole hey when fishing for Jacks!

Without a better picture I would say it’s a Flathead Catfish. If your friend kept it he must have known what it was. It could also be a type of cod that swam up the river.

That’s not a real fish, it’s a pillow. I have one at home haha

Edit: actually it’s here at cabin. I just snapped this pic.

Not sure if it is a pillow or not but the st Lawrence has big channel cats - so if not a pillow... I would say a descent size channel

defiantly not a channel cat. I have caught a lot of those.

So the real question should be how does pillow fish taste compared to pike? Definitely less bones to fillet around I bet

I know this is a kinda old thread but I was doing some research today on another subject and run across a Catfish that looks a lot like the one the OP posted.

It's called a Spotted shovel- nosed catfish and it can weigh up to 200 pounds.

After looking at the OPs photo again I notice it does not appear to have a camo pattern like the pillow does.

I don't know if I believe the OPs fish is real but it does appear as though it might be. If so it could well be a Spotted shovel- nosed catfish.
