Picked up a 1989 ford ranger for 200 bucks, homemade lift kit and a set of bigger tires , took that poor truck through things most quads wont go through. put 180 000km on it. It did everything from swamp to motorcross tracks, it never had a problem. Had 480 000km when i finally sold it. Still running today (5years later) I sold it to a buddy for $400, he still drives it on a daily basis!!

For one of the most unreliable motors ford ever built (2.9L V6) that truck never let me down!

Not as cheap as the rest on here, but thanks to a breakdown in communication at work, I managed to pick up a 2006 F250 Extended cab for $500 bucks and a 2005 F250 for $1000. They were put up for tender by one division, and though we needed a new ard truck, my division didn't know they were available.
I sold the 2006 for $2500 on the spot because it needed a bit of work, and use the 2005 (regular cab) for work and water hauling. Its in excellent condition.
So I guess I got two functioning F250's for -$1000, buy the time I left the site. I still smile about it.

The old man sold me his 1979 Mercury Marquis for $1 back in '93-ish.

460 cubes under the hood.. Beast would pass anything but a gas station with ease.

I called it the 'Battleship Potemkin'. You would likely have to carry your boater's license with you if you drove it today!!

Sold it for a grand after a couple years if I remember correctly...

bought a 1968 Chev impala for $100.00 to drive around until my Javalin was repaired. the Impala was side swiped while parked on the street and it had a lot of body damage with no door handles on the drivers side. Hence the low price from the lady I bought it off. Sold it to a buddy for a bottle of scotch as he wanted the 327 in it.

The things you could get away driving in the early 80's.

My cheapest vehicle was not one of the cheapest shown on here, but I think it is one of the coolest. I purchased a '63 Austin Cambridge Wagon for $300. The cool aspect is because the car could be started with a crank you slid in through the front bumper. I had lost the key for it, so I had it hotwired and popped the clutch to stall it, and cranked it to start it.
I came out from the mall one day and the guy parked in front of me had a dead battery, he would turn his key and get nbothing but clicks. He got out of his vehicle, slamming the door in frustration, as I walked to the front of my car, slid in the crank and with one good twist started the motor. He froze, looked at me and yelled "NO WAY!!!" I just smiled and drove away.
