Default Hand loads for 17 Hornady Hornet

Anyone on the forum reloading for the 17 Hornady Hornet? If so, what's working best as far as bullet, powder, primer combo?

Layne Simpson wrote a fairly substantial article on hand loading the 17 hornet. If I recall he had a difficult time matching the velocity of factory ammo and was just able to match the accuracy of it. If you could dig up the article it would ne a beneficial read. Good luck.

Man if those little cases take 10.2 gr's, that's cheap reloading.

Yep they sure do, it's hard to measure the .2grs with an old manual scale

Send lclund a pm, he found an accurate arms powder that worked great. I did some loads with AA 1680 that worked well and some loads the H335 that shot well. FS

For you guys shooting the 17hornet - how loud do you find them?
I realize it's subjective but would you say they are comparable to the 22mag, 22hornet, or 223?

AA 2200 works best. Here is a link to Western Powders data. http://www.accuratepowder.com/wp-con...ec_1-23-14.pdf

Hodgdon have data online as well.

Do not use Hornady' published loads with AA 1680 as they are too hot like the factory ammo that belw primers ans sprayed Fasteel in the face on a hot day last summer. I can bet Layne Simpson had a hard time matching the velocity in Hornady's factory ammo. Here is what a Factory Brass looks like after the web streches about 0.007"+. BE EXTRA CAREFUL WHEN USING THIS HORNADY FACTORY AMMO ON A HOT DAY

Where are you guys finding accurate powders? I have little gun and 4227, but really want a pound of 2200 or 1680.
Timely thread as just prepped 100 brass, and deciding what load and weights to try first.

I find that's its a little louder than a 22 but a lot more quite than a 223

If you don't mind, post results when you've refined a load for your gun. I know there might be some variations due to firearms but would be nice not to start from ground zero.

For the record, I have a CZ 17 HH in the American model.

Hodgdon list 10.0 grains Lil Gun as Max at 3629 fps and 48,200 PSI. Your velocities are abort 5.5 percent faster which could be accounted for by lot to lot inconsistencies and barrel differences. This likely puts your pressures at about 50,800 PSI and perhaps more as temperatures increase. Lot to lot inconsistiencies, giving velocities like you are reporting with LilGun, might explain the sudden, violent, pressure problems some have experienced in the small 17's. The safe thing to do is back off about .5 grains and bring your velioities down to Hodgdon's posted max velocity of about 3630 and keep the pressure down at safe limits. Better yet find some AA 2200 which is a much better fit.

Guess the search for some AA 2200 begins.

All that was available around here was the varmint model but wanted the American to compliment my CZ 223. Yes its a little lighter with a thinner barrel but I don't plan to heat up the barrel.

After all our gophers are sporadic and we have to take our time and enjoy the shooting. Sort of like quality over quantity!
