2016 Ice updates
I figured we should start this thread so we can help each other out and stay safe.
Was at devils today 5 inches on the south side but didn't venture to far out as I was by myself.
Star Lake looks good there were about 5 people fishing it today
Mink Lake there was one tent set up.
Please keep this thread going

5" of solid black ice on lac ste anne yesterday to about 150 yards off shore. Didn't venture any further due to some sketchy pressure cracks/ heaves.

Be careful on Ste Anne early ice. It is known to have some thin ice spots and even has open water in spots much of the year. The narrows is one bad spot but I believe there are a few more as well.

Bite was honestly non existent went and punched about 10 holes around in the shallows all around anywhere from 4'-13' with no sign of fish anywhere. Tried small minnows on size 12 treble as well as dough. Tried small spoon, yellow jig, lindy grub ect and nothin but ice looks to be well on its way now good 3.5-4" minimum black ice. We just moved here in the summer so haven't been able to figure it out yet lol

Went to check out a few of the southern reservoirs today. Macgreagor had some ice in the back bays but lake was wide open. Traverse had a few inches right at the campground and a couple groups fishing it.

Travers/McGregor reports
Just got in from Travers......4-6 inches near Little Bow Campground where there were about 15 people huddled in tents. Fished the Pillars for whites, saw lots of slabs cruising but couldn't get them to bite. Pulled in a bunch of walleyes and a small pike on whitefish rigs(fun but damn they need a slot limit for eyes instead of 0 retention). Drove up to the spillway but the ice looks sketchy so I didn't attempt any holes and I saw no sign of anyone having been on the ice.
Went to McGregor on the way home and drilled several holes near the boat launch and a bit farther south by where the canal enters the lake....only 2-3 inches ice which is out of my 300# comfort zone so I didn't drop a line. There were two guys fishing the dam, don't know how they made out. A couple more days before I risk it. I expect both lakes will be busy this weekend

Wabamun....
Went to Fallis point tuesday at the YO WO CAS camp side as it was more sheltered from the brutal windchill. Ice 200ft out was 8.5" and 9" in between there and shore. Nice clear black ice. Caught some pike and walleye but nothing huge. It was nice to get out and fish.... and send my buddy out to look for thin ice....

Travers
Another trip to Travers today...Little Bow campground...8 inches of ice and I saw a car drive on the ice by the swim floats...crazy.
Fishing for whites was slow, only managed 1 keeper. Walleye were biting everything I dropped down the hole including wire worms so there was never a dull moment. A large school of perch showed at around one o'clock but none were of any size...3 inches was the biggest I landed...a whale I know lol
Should be a good weekend for those of you who are lucky enough to have jobs and can only get out on the weekends, my unemployed butt will be back out On Monday.
Tight lines

Buffalo Pound by MooseJaw
Not sure the thickness but an F150 is 45 degrees in the water at a pressure ridge.

Saw that picture, ifish says 10 inches as of 2 days ago so might have had 12+ inches.
That is why I always wait for conservative ice. All it takes is a bad spot and your hooped. Pressure ridges are always dangerous even in thick ice, buddy shouldn't have attempted that crossing.
We almost lost a quad in what must have been an invisible pressure ridge last year. The surface looked the same as the rest of the lake but when we drove over it top bit broke and ended up in over a foot of water and had to work hard to get out.
It was quite the eye opener because there were literally no signs of it being a bad ice spot and if we had been in a vehicle could have been in big trouble.
