Sylvan Lake Ice Survey - Saturday Dec 07th.
A couple days ago, the town started cleared the snow off the area where they have the rinks and began flooding the ice, that's normally a good sign otherwise the Fire Chief wouldn't allow town staff on the lake.
Scott & I went out to check the ice this morning, brought the toboggan, CNR Spud Bar, rope etc and started down from the Lighthouse area, very little snow on the lake, could see someone was out on a quad staying close to shore. As well, we could see some open water from the natural spring at the Marina entrance with some flood water, suggest you stay away from there, not safe. If you come out to Sylvan check the ice conditions when you arrive, it may vary from location to location, don’t count on this info/pic’s & I wouldn’t even consider driving on this early in the season.
Fishin season opens here at 12:01 am on December 11th ....
Some pic’s …. enjoy.
Cheers

We walked out 100 yds confirmed with the Lazer & found 8.5” decent ice.
Went 200 yds out, about 4” white ice and 9.5” overall.
Sunbreaker Cove RR #22 Boat Launch
Bit of an ice heave, nothing like last year, there’s a large crack/separation with some flood water facing west, towards Palm Bay area.
Went out 200 yds, found 7.5 ” decent ice.
I believe these Know Your Reg's - Fish Species signs went up this year.

First ice photo looked like 4-5 inches of clear ice and the rest slush ice.
Hopefully the ice improves.

The first pic was about 100 Yds out from the Lighthouse, ice formed with no snow & no wind to break it up, the second pic in your post was 200 Yds out, the ice broke up and we had quite a bit of snow that's why the first 4 or more inches on the surface is white ice. The dark ice beneath has formed with the colder temps. I believe Sylvan has been ice covered now for approx 2 weeks, so it's forming/growing nicely.
Should also mention after we drilled our holes there was no flood water, the lake water was just a bit below the ice surface. It's snowing here now, don't expect much accumulation, the ice conditions look good on Sylvan for opening day.

Zip and Scott, thanks for taking the time and reporting back. Look to be a good ice year! I'll bet Gull is averaging 2-3 inches more as it usually does.
