It's been all over the news for several hours. Sadly, such acts have become common occurrence in the USofA.

In the end, it's nothing new now. Do we really need to chew on this one too?

After seeing some of the content the suspect posted how did people not see red flags?

Not even gona bring gun control into this topic, but maybe in the future see some sort of training for everyone to help recognize these behaviours especially amongst students and teachers.

Happens here as well, may not be as frequent but it still happens.

Same old same old!

The same old "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims"

In my opinion they need to do more than just pray. The USA needs to do something!

The NRA needs to do more than just protecting the rights of gun owners. The NRA should also be responsible for protecting people from gun crime.

It should be illegal for politicians or any political party to accept donations from the NRA.

The NRA does help protect people from gun crime however they are not in the field of mental health which is the actual problem. This would be the responsibility of the people and government not a gun rights organization.

And your right there should be less corporate donations to the government.
You are also right every teacher in America should be a member of the NRA.

My heart goes out to those affected by this tragedy.

My understanding is that this figure is nonsense and includes a number of negligent discharges including a policeman that had a negligent discharge while on school grounds.

Nope. The problem is single parent homes, lack of accountability, me first mentality, the inability to self filter social media use, religious indifference, and the list goes on.

Religious indifference ????? I bet most, if not all of these shooters identify as "Christian".

Who cares? I’m talking Society in the USA. Not the individual.

This is so bang on. Yet some refuse to accept it. Studies to back up all of this have been out for some time.

How is the States the only country with these issues?

Very tragic event indeed.
FBI released a statement today stating that they did not properly follow up on the tip they received about the shooter. They said protocol was not followed and that the FBI Miami office of the FBI should have investigated. Quite different than their previous statement when the FBI said they could not locate the individual. Mental Health issues need to be addressed.

Yep, definitely looks like the FBI missed an opportunity to intervene. And yes, I agree that mental health issues need to be addressed - and it's safe to say MH is definitely a precipitating factor in all or most of these shootings. That said, the rates and prevalence of MH disorders are not higher per capita in the US than other countries in the industrialized world, but the rates of gun violence seems to be.

But there are many layers here. Even though the USA has by far the highest rate of gun related deaths in the industrialized world, there are many countries with much higher rates with far fewer guns owned / citizen, as found in some struggling south american and african countries that can have rates at least 4x the gun death rate of the USA. Although, corrupt governments and organized crime probably factor in in these cases.

If even close to accurate, this is a very interesting link to gun deaths around the world:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ted_death_rate

Perhaps the most staggering statistic I found on this page is the rate of suicides by gun, where the USA is second highest in the world only to Montenegro. In the case of suicide (and possibly homicide to some degree), maybe it's not so much a "gun control" issue as it is a "proximity to gun during dark times" issue. Not to sound glib, but this is not unlike the communities in Alberta who voted out VLTs and saw local problem gambling rates drop off significantly.

There was a post earlier comparing guns to cars killing people. Here's another way to look at it: If you have a country with an average of 4 cars on the road per km and a country with 40 cars on the road per km, guess which country is going to have more car related deaths? This is the case with the USA and proximity to guns. When the worldwide average is 15 guns owned per 100 inhabitants and the USA sits at 101.5 guns owned per 100 inhabitants (highest in the world) - then $h1ts gonna happen...

Based on the World Health Organization report from 2004, the USA had the highest Mental Health Disorders at 26.4%. Countries included in the report were 14, USA, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Ukraine, Mexico, Columbia, France, Spain, Japan, Nigeria, Lebanon, Italy and Beijing China.

I found the report, albeit quite old (2004), on the NBC Mental Health page. I could not find an updated report.

Since it appears that the USA has done little to address Mental Health issues for many years it possibly is reasonable to assume that the USA does still have a very high rate of Mental Health disorders.
If someone can provide a link to The NBC Mental Health page or an updated report from the WHO please do.

See the WHO report for percentage by country.

Yes the report is old, but much like a flat tire, if you do not fix the flat tire it stays flat.

Cause ‘Merica...if they didn’t have the guns they’d be using something else. The rest of the first world has video games/social media too. Lots of countries, like ours, have lots of guns.
But the rate of occurrence for this type of thing in the US is exponentially larger than in any other country.
The lack of screening for mental health, access to high capacity firearms, and a glorifying media all play a role but their cultural propensity and willingness to use violence is what sets them apart.

Or is it idle hands and prosperity. Children in other countries struggle to survive or are at a time in their history where they have not yet reached a peak. You are not thinking about shooting up the school when people are trying to kill you or you are half starved most of the time. If you do pick up arms you are a soldier, not a misunderstood teenager.

This is the first generations in the USA and Canada where the children will not be better off than the parents and in fact they have been divided into two distinct groups. Those that come from wealth will inherit or at least get enough assistance to get by and those that do not will have to succeed beyond reasonable accomplishment. There are many in the first group that can find no mental stimulation and wallow in ego and/or self pity. There are many in the second group that are completely overwhelmed or frustrated and are becoming desperate for some sort of identity.

I moved to Alberta a lifetime ago to raise my children in an environment where a person that works hard will make a very good wage and prosper. There are very few places in Canada and I doubt the USA where this is true anymore. You have to be above average intelligence, have chosen the right career path, had at least decent financial backing, and had a bit of luck along the way.

50% of the population is not of above average intelligence and/or do not have the backing and drive to succeed. Do you really think they are just going to sit idly by in poverty and watch the other half flourish?

The factories have closed, the jobs are gone, families are disintegrating, drug use/overdose are at epidemic proportion and we smugly sit here in our comfortable homes contemplating the fate of the world.

Do you people truly believe that by tweaking gun laws and ordering the people to toe the line that tomorrow is going to be a better day?

At the end of the day....such a senseless loss of life.

Now the experts are going to dive in and give it thier shot from its Trumps fault to fail in The education system....and all that falls in between.
