One of 2 rifles

If you had 2 rifles, a ruger model 77 1980 in 280 rem and a Winchester model 70 in 270 win 1976 year which one would you sell? Thanks Bill

Me personally the 280 because I can find 270 easier. Plus I prefer the model 70 bolt to the ruger bolt.

Personally I prefer the .280 as a cartridge, but I am a reloader.
And I’m a southpaw…… so if they were mine and both are right handlers, I’d sell them both……

I’ve had multiple rifles and not all fit and point as I would like. I have to work really hard to shoot some styles differently than others.

Owned both calibers and hands down I prefer the 270 caliber.

I would turf the Ruger in a heartbeat over the Mod 70. If you like the 280 better, use the loot from the Ruger to rebarrel the Mod 70.

Thats a pretty tough one. If I had to hunt the rest of my life with a single load, it would be the .270win loaded with a good 150 grain bullet... but the same weight bullet in a .280 is even a little better.

Ruger vs Winchester, I've owned both and I'd pretty much call it a tie. Ruger is more rugged, the Winchester is more refined. Not sure if the 76' Winchester is CRF or not, if it is CRF then its likely a better gun to hang on to value wise. If not I'd keep the Ruger, tang safety Rugers seem to be slightly more desirable than push feed M70's, someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Perhaps you should just get rid of all your other rifles and keep those two, knowing all your hunting needs are well handled, and you've got a spare.

Owned all three, and no way would I endorse this idea... the one exception being if you happen to be a die-hard still hunter and your aging wrists can no longer put up with carying a 9lb rifle around for days on end (sigh). At that point the Tikka, sadly, becomes more practical.

I had an experience with a tang safety 77 that cost me a moose, then checked a bunch more of them at the range over the next year or so. 95% did the same thing, wouldn't pickup a round, an empty chamber, from a bolt closed over a full mag, mine was a 7RM, did it on various other cartridges too. It's a liveable issue with a lot of people I guess, a lot weren't aware of it either, that I encountered. Just have to reach up and push the nose down, then it'll go. That soured me on the 77 tang safety version.

Well 7mm is a great cartridge. Second to the 300 win mag. The 300 win has a slight edge, but you pay the price in recoil. If 80% of you hunting is in the prairies go with the 7mm. If 80 % is in the foothills then go 30-06. 7 mm gives you some better range than the 30-06. But at ranges under 300. They are are very similar.IMO opinion. 7mm has a slight edge.

Just for comparison, I don’t own or ever shot a 300. Shot, 30-06, 7mm, 338 win wag; and a multitude of others.

Some days it is hard to choose whether to take the 30-06 or 7mm. Both are great. My next purchase is a 338 win mag.

All other things aside. Take them both to the range: shoot a bunch of rounds of each. And go with what feels right. Either choose will work great.

Tough choice my preferred rifle would be the Mod 70 caliber choice would be the .280.
I shot a moose couple days ago with my .280 put it down like Thor's hammer buddy shot his bull with a .270 both calibers worked well having said that I'd keep the Mod. 70.

I would seriously consider keeping the Ruger in .280, then have it Ackley Improved real soon .
