Default Question on Elk 3 point minimum

I went bow hunting for Elk last year in a Bow only season with with both the cow and 3 point bull seasons open. I set up on the transition from a wooded area to an oat field and had a Bull Elk walk out and stand broadside at 10 yards. I was at full draw, but couldn't count more than 2 points. I didn't shoot, thinking he was not legal, and the Bull eventually walked off.

I told this story to a hunting buddy of mine last night and he said that any Elk is legal to shoot in a bow only season. I couldn't believe it. I re-read the regulations and couldn't find anything to support his claim. His point was that you can shoot a bull, cow or calf moose in bow only season when it is open for both bull and cow, so why not the same for Elk?

What do you think?

He's wrong you're right. The difference between moose and elk is there is no size restrictions for moose.

Depends on the WMU. Some have a 3 or 6 point restriction on taking an antlered elk, some don't. Check the regs for the area you are hunting.

Trust your own interpretation of the regs. You're the one that will be responsible for your actions, not your friend.

There is archery season for antlered and antlerless Elk not restricted to 3 points in zones 212, 248, 936,200, 202,203,232,234.
Page 46 in hunting Regs.

You sed that it was 3point minimum zone so this applies to both seasons archery and rifle.

3 point elk zone, is a three point zone...... it doesn't get much clearer than that. Your buddy had better brush up on his hunting regs.

Ya, that's the way I've always looked at it. Thought maybe I was missing something.
