Default ABA 3d Bowhunter Challenge Class Happenings 2016

The ABA 3d Bowhunter Challenge is alive and well. Just a quick note that a letter will be sent out to all ABA affiliate/associate clubs outlining the program this year. If a club wants to add the class they can contact the ABA 3d Committee. We are hoping that the all the clubs in Alberta will embrace the idea.

If a club picks up the class the ABA will provide scorecards, medals for all Bowhunter Challenge Class placements (1,2,3 and kids medals), rule sheet. All the club has to provide is the course and the shooters!

If you want your club to add the class please contact the ABA.

More information to follow.

The ABA Bowhunter Challenge submission request emails have gone out.

If you intend on submitting a bid please email the submission to kris@albertabowhunters.com by May 22, 2016. The 3d Committee would like to make a decision by May 31, 2016.

Also if any clubs wish to add the ABA Bowhunter Challenge Class to their regular outdoors shoots please let us know! We will assist by providing an "implementation package" with everything you need to insert the class into your shoot.

Is the max range for this class still 40yards for 2016? I would like to see it included in our clubs shoot but the extra set up the different max yardage is a deturant for the club.

Yes 40 yards max, no extra stake or setup as the green stake is still standard. Just the equipment used is changed and stake position if a "hunting" simulated shot is desired.

Is the green stake the trad/recurve class?

I think it's the juniors stake that the hunter class uses. The trad guys have a 30 yard max I think.

Thanks, i don't think that that the green stake classes have been included in our last few shoots, I guess that's where the extra set up would come in.

Certainly, email the address above. Every year ABA members who would like to attend the AGM are free to attend the 3d meeting.

The format for this year has been decided upon.

They can be found on the ABA website.

iii. All traditional bows will be drawn by fingers in contact with the bowstring and released by opening the hand. Exceptions are horn rings and if the person is disabled, a mouth release may be used.
iv. Bow silencers attached to the string may be used.
v. The arrows may be of any type and may be nocked with lighted nocks

No gloves or tabs?

or is this a mis-print and should read "All Traditional bows will be drawn by figers in contact with the arrow , a glove or tab is permitted.

It should say this then. As written it is quite explicit to the contrary.

Gloves or tabs allowed

Oversight in wording, we requested input from the ATBA when making these rules.

The new rules for 2016 have not yet hit the website, but this will be part of the new edits.

Thanks for pointing that out!

One of the main goals of this class/shoot is to be inclusive rather than exclusive, hence there are still rules pertaining to allowable equipment but they are significantly relaxed from other sets of rules.

Hi all here is an update I saw on face book

"We will be announcing the winner of the bid to hold the ABA Bowhunter Challenge Final 2016 soon! We are also looking for prize donations for the final shoot. Last year due to the generosity of our sponsors we were able to send home each and every participant with a random draw prize. This year we want to try and achieve the same goal!

Also as you all know a buckle was awarded in a shoot-up between the top 12 archers of the tournament. Jim-Bows Archery has offered to sponsor that buckle this year!

If you are able to donate for this final shoot please email, kris@albertabowhunters.com, or if you know a local to you ABA 3d Committee representative, please let them know.

Thanks again to our sponsors from last year, our first shoot in this format! Really looking forward to this shoot to be held early to mid-August 2016.

Reminder, to be eligible for placement prizes and the buckle shootup you must be an ABA member in good standing."

Default Rules of the Final Shoot

Please have a look at the below ruleset to know whether your equipment will fit the guidelines for the Bowhunter Challenge.

All archers are welcome, if your equipment falls out side the guidelines you will be placed in a non-competitive category.

Remember the shoot is unmarked yardage, no rangefinders, with a 40 yard maximum for Compound shooters age 16 and up. 30 yard maximum for Traditional and all other classes.

Equipment:

a. All Classes:

i. The stabilizer system can be any shape or configuration as long as it is contained within a theoretical sphere having a radius of 12 inches measured from the point of attachment on front of bow (For the purposes of this rule, any device adding length or weight to the stabilizer shall be considered part of the stabilizer and shall be subject to the 12-inch rule. Un-weighted vibration dampeners are not considered to be stabilizers; however, un-weighted vibration dampeners attached to the stabilizer are measured as a part of the stabilizer and are subject to the 12-inch rule above.

ii. Sights: less than 12” and can be fixed pins or movable as long as pin is moveable without audible clicking. (not conducive to hunting) No lenses (magnifying or not) in front sight. Any number of pins can be used, any size, shape or configuration.

iii. Peeps are allowed clarifiers or verifiers, as used in hunting.

iv. Rangefinders not allowed however binoculars can be utilized at stake prior to shot only

v. *NEW* Lighted nocks are legal for all classes

b. EMBH/FMBH/MBH/FBH/M16/F16: All the above plus

i. Draw weight over 40 lbs (hunting legal)

ii. Minimum arrow weight is 300 grains

iii. Arrows must not have glue in points. They need to have an insert or out-sert that can hold a commercially available broad head.

c. Traditional:

i. Traditional equipment will be either a longbow, recurve or self-bow of any make or design and will not include sights or stabilizers.

ii. All bows in MTBH/ FTBH- 16 and above will be required to have a legal bow (40 lbs. at 28”)

iii. All traditional bows will be drawn by fingers in contact with the bowstring and released by opening the hand. Exceptions are horn rings and if the person is disabled, a mouth release may be used. Note: Gloves and finger tabs may be used.

iv. Bow silencers attached to the string may be used.

v. The arrows may be of any type and may be nocked with lighted nocks.

d. All equipment outside of these classes are not eligible for bow hunter challenge. Any participant who is unsure if equipment meets requirements must approach ABA committee prior to shooting first arrow and any decisions of this ABA committee is final for that shoot but will be discussed after shoot for future shoots.

Donated prizes are coming in and starting to collect.

North American Hunting Supplies
Canadian Tire South Edmonton
Wolverine Guns and Tackle

....to name a few.

This should be a great shoot and an awesome primer for hunting season. Hope to see a bunch of folks from here there!

Just had a couple questions regarding the upcoming shoot as this will be my first shoot that I have attended.

1- do we need to pre register at all or just show up on Friday and register then.

2- is there room for Tavel trailers to camp over night?

3- what would am I to expect brought the day? Do we all shoot at once or are we broken up into groups?

I think that is it for now haha as I said this will be my first shoot so I'm pretty oblivious as to what to do.
Thanks

That's awesome you are coming out!

1. Lots of camping available, registration is Friday night and Sat Morning. 2 rounds of 20 shot Saturday with lunch midday and a dinner Saturday night. No pre-registration.

2 You can make your own group (3-5 usually) or join a group, if you are coming alone you will be put in a group. Bring lots of arrows (range is not known but a max of 40 yards), binoculars (to see where the scoring rings are), water and snacks for the course. Usually takes 1.5-2 to complete 20 targets depending on the flow.

We all started somewhere so don't worry the archery community is very accepting, ask lots of questions and have fun!
