Large to Small rifle primer conversion
Good afternoon Gents,
Looking to use up some small rifle primers I acquired in a package deal (and SRP are easier to find currently over LRP). I would like to use them in either a 22-250 or even 243. I do know the conversion requires knowing where the firing pin strikes the primer and depth. I do also know Peterson makes (or made) SRP brass for 243, but am unable to to find them. The only goal with this is to use the SRP brass for plinking/range use, I will leave the LRP brass for hunting.
Would it be smart to just neck size down a 308 win SRP case? (I do believe 243 win is a necked down version of 308 Win with the only difference being the caliber.)
Are there other options available for this conversion?

Yea, I haven't ever come across any SRP 243 brass.
I have used lots of 308 brass in 243 tho, so that would be the easiest and probably cheapest as there is lots of it, and comes up often as 1x fired.

SMP will only fit in a flash hole for small and vise versa you cannot get a LRP in a SMP flash hole and a SRP will fall out of a LRP hole they are not interchangeable.

If one made an adapter the issue becomes in cooler weather not having enough heat in small rifle primers to ignite cases such as 243 . There is a reason the manufactures do what they do .

Primers are relatively cheap, why bother ? I once saw a conversion process for Berdan to Boxer primers, involved a lathe and precision work.

Many years ago fuzzing with 22 cheetah we had some bench rest cases with small primer pockets. Got misfires/ hang fires .

Just make a trade with someone.

especially! with the HHR reticle. (no duplex pls.)

If you’re truly having problems getting LRP and you have lots of SRP, you could get a 223 to use them. There is srp 6.5 creedmoor brass available too.

Yes, just get 308 SRP brass and neck it down.

Depending on the chamber that can cause problems as well. Had a friend that tried that and the 308 brass neck was too thick, round would not chamber. .243 Win.

Neck turning solves such issues.
If a shooter is dead set on going the SRP route, and has to form .308 brass because that’s what’s readily available, then neck turning shouldn’t be a quantum leap in the process to them.
FWIW: I’ve personally squished lots of .308, and 7.62x51 brass down to .243, and have never had an issue with neck thickness. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen but in a factory rifle it’s a fairly rare occurrence.That’s why you work loads up, and evaluate loadings before going a field.

Yeah, got about 400 SRP's and wanted to see if it was possible to use them up instead of trying to either trade them off or buy a new rifle, especially with the shortage of LRP's that still persists  . I got lots to think on, especially the idea of constant hang/miss fires being prevalent with this conversion.

Only 400 ? Trade 'em off... If you had a box or two, necking down 308 SRP might make sense but.
