Default Antelope Trivia

Watched an Antelope hunt and found out 2 interesting things I didn't know.
...Antelope 2nd fastest land animal on planet. Only African Cheetah is faster. No wonder they're called "speed goats".
...Only horned animal that sheds they're horns. Don't confuse horns with antlers, though i don't really know what the distinction is.

A personal piece of trivia....Don't think I could accumulate enough priority points to ever hunt one in AB. I have never seen one in the field.

Antlers are true bone, Horns are a 2 part system consisting of an inner bone and an outer sheath that is actually a special hair follicle

SOME INFO ON PRONGHORN WHO REALLY HAVE NO CLOSE RELATIVES IN N. AMERICA. TAKEN FROM A MAMMAL TEXTBOOK I HAVE.
Taxonomic History and Nomenclature
• Antilo = antelope; capro = male goat
•Pronghorn are the only surviving genus of the North American ungulate family Antilocapridae.
•Debate remains over whether pronghorn belong in their own family or should be classified in Bovidae or in deer family (Cervidae). Recent genetic study says they are closer to giraffes (Giraffidae) forming a sister group to cervids and bovids.
•Like bovids, pronghorn have horns consisting of a keratinous sheath over a bony core. But unlike bovids whose horn core is permanent, the horn sheath is shed annually and re-grown. Deer antlers don't have sheaths, but the antlers are lost and regrown yearly.

Phylogeny •Antilocaprid ancestors most likely evolved in the Old World and migrated to North American during the Late Oligocene.

•Pronghorn evolved alongside predators such as dire wolves, the short-faced bear, the North American lion, jaguars, hyenas, and cheetahs; pronghorn were most likely prey for these species.

I beleave Antelope don't jump over fences or any other obstacles, they go under or around and I read somewhere that Bats and Antelopes are Albertas only mammals that migrate.

Yes.....

Our Pronghorns are neither goats nor antelopes, except for in name.

Antilocapridae (Antelope Goat)

Thanks TicDoc, great info as always,

Mountain goats are Goat-Antelope

Mountain goats are not true goats—but they are close relatives. They are more properly known as goat-antelopes.

Pronghorn Antelogoates are unique in that they reach maximun horn size very early in life. The condition of their dam during pregnancy is the most important variable in the trophy potentail of a buck.

The recent poor trophy quality of Alberta pronghorns over the last few years is as expected due to the previous harsh winters. Following this principal, the trophy potential in 2017-2019 will be looking good.
