Default Couple Q's on treestand hunting

I am pretty new to archery and will be attempting to arrow a bear from a treestand in May. Few questions on this.
1 What's the norm, shooting seated or standing?
2 Would you position your treestand with the barrels straight ahead? Or maybe at the 10 or 2 o'clock position?
3 I am planning on wearing a harness. How high should you attach your lanyard?

Thanks for advice on these or any other points pertaining to archery from the treestand!

Brian

Shot my first archery bear last fall from a tree stand , facing the bait sitting . It is different shooting from a sitting position. Grab a target when your out , and try a few standing and seated if you can . The biggest thing is to remember to keep your form while aiming down . Hope this helps

As tempting as it is to have a close shot just remember that the closer the animal is the steeper shooting angle ....same goes for stand height, the higher the stand the steeper the shot angle which will inhibit whether or not you can shoot sitting.
I would recommend a stand height of 12-15ft to the platform and a 20 yard shot if your preference is to sit and to have your barrel or preferred shot at the 10 or 2 depending on which hand you shoot.

-1 -I prefer to stand but sometimes you get caught with yer pantss down...so its best to learn both ways as mentioned...Which applies to #2

-2 If your sitting its easiest to shoot 10-11oclock for a RH shooter

-3 Harness high enough you can should sitting ...stand and shoot but not interfer...

Good Luck
Neil

Default Thanks

I appreciate the replys gents. I am going to try shooting seated vs standing and see what feels best. I do like the idea of setting the barrels at 10 o'clock as I do shoot right hand. Only another few weeks and I'll be setting up baits, can't wait for this hunt!
Thx again

Try set baits to the east of stand...most of your hunting will be done in the evening...let the bear look into the sun!!!

Terrible tip Neil....

As most already know, bears sense of smell is amazing and their eyesight not so good... You have to play the wind if your serious about running an arrow through any mature jug head. Remember these baited bears have learned from many past experiences and the mature ones are no fools...

Enjoy the fuzzy bush pigs and best of luck.

Knew that was going to mentioned....lol

As most know the Prevailing wind Direction (March, April and May): 1971 to 2000 is from southwest blowing to northeast in most of Alberta...

http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/sag6451?opendocument

A stand north west of bait at 10:00 postion will see little wind hitting bait from stand...I have shot three B&C bears with the bow in this set up...as long as your not working out ... smoking cigars up there scent will be minimal...Besides the big boys know that food didnt get there from the food gods...

Many times that big boy will come in down wind most times anyway...

keep scent to mininum...as with all hunting for sure...

Nothing worse than a stand that is sun blind in the evening...

Neil

Most know you wont kill a jug head in March, April or May Neil as the rut happens in June and the thermals will always push South in the evenings in Alberta ! LOL

The mature ones seem to really circle the area as you mention they know the groceries came from someone Have switched it up to ground and pound the past few years which adds a whole new perspective to spring bears.

All the best to those heading out...

Got all the big boys mid may....lol
True by June they are all rubbed and worn out anyway...lol

Hey got another tip: If you see a bear that walks on all the fallen trees on the ground...pass on him ...thats the three year olds trying to look bigger...it works they do look bigger...but they are still runts...look for the guy that steps over that log without breaking stride...
