Ummm no, it's up at Devon.
The airport brings up a dang good question. I am not sure what the airport can handle, as far as bigger planes, they put out the bid to host and signed the contract, one would hope its been through the ringer and decided if we want it, let's get atter.....

10 yrs and the CFR.
Just what the City of Reddeer needs.
Let's keep it civil, throw out some pros an cons if you will.

I hope you’re right!
I think the biggest con in Red Deer is the size of their building. Sure they’re a city on the grow, but to put up a 15000 seat facility in a city that size would be hard to justify. The CFR would be the only real attraction capable of putting that many bums in the seats all year.
The con to Edmonton, and Northlands is that the CFR moving may mean the end of farm fair. Everything at the expo centre, trade show, heritage ranch rodeo, is a play on the CFR. There is some cattle and horse shows, but they don’t really bring a lot of people in.
But Red Deer will benefit a lot I think. I don’t think many people are going to travel a great distance to attend the Rodeo in Red Deer, which is just as well, because there aren’t that many tickets to go around. But there is a strong local rural population and a lot of young people to fill the bars during rodeo week!

My wife and I will certainly be attending. We are only 20 min away. I believe Red Deer was a good choice as it is central to the province and has a vast rural population. One doesn't have to fight big city traffic and hotels are a short distance from the venue. Probably will need a reservation for Billy Bob's . Airport may be a problem, not sure what size aircraft it can accommodate. Also, not sure what airline currently lands there now, if any.
Looking forward to it.

only air canada flies to red deer now and only through calgary

Red Deer's gain, Edmonton's loss. Wishing Red Deer all the best in hosting the CFR.

Glad Red Deer can put it on but it will be run more like a small rodeo. And yes CFR board did get greedy in their demands and they will see it with prize $$$ 100% that is something they will not get back soon. Bad bad poker hands the board played Good thing its staying in Alberta too so hope Red Deer pulls in some $$$$

Going to be a huge, huge boost into their economy. Reddeer has a good thing going with Westerner Days. Have the chucks as well in the summer.
Seats for the venue, as mentioned before, might be an issue, see what year one brings.

Good for Red Deer. Been too long since the Silver Buckle Rodeo ended. They renovated to add seating on the west end for the Memorial Cup, I believe they can do the same on the east end.

It's official:

Red Deer was named as the new host of the Canadian Finals Rodeo at an announcement made at the ENMAX Centrium hockey arena on Tuesday evening.
The massive rodeo event has been held at Edmonton’s Northlands Coliseum for its entire 44-year run. But when the city decided to shut down the facility, the CFR had to look for a new home in 2018 and beyond.
The operators of Edmonton’s new arena, Rogers Place, decided not to bid on hosting the rodeo.
Red Deer and Saskatoon were both vying for the event. Back in November after making the bid, the CEO of Westerner Park said he was asking for a multi-year deal.
“We’d like CFR’s new home to be Red Deer,” Ben Antifaiff said in November. “To us, I think it means at least 10 years, but it could be the next 40 or more years in central Alberta.”

The Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce and Canadian Professional Rodeo Association were on hand for Tuesday’s announcement at the ENMAX Centrium, the home of the Red Deer Rebels hockey team. The arena has about 6,600 seats but can be expanded to allow for a crowd of 8,000.
The CFR started in 1974 and draws thousands of visitors yearly. It also offers one of the richest purses in Canada.

I hear 1.65 mil for prize money. Not sure how that compares to previous CFRs
