air pistol for grouse

Is anyone carry air pistol to shoot grouse when hunting big game?
Sometime I hunt big game in pretty big cut block and I would consider shooting the grouse along the way.
Is air pistol would be enough to take a grouse ?
I never had air pistol, only air rifle. I think air pistol would be light enough and not too noisy for certain area.
What do u guys think? Any experience or pistol recomendation would be great.

I do not believe there is anything illegal as long as the air pistol is below 500fps. I carry a Smith and Wesson 79G.

I was gonna go the air pistol route cause I like grouse as well as big game. First got a slingshot, I suck at it. Then was gonna get an air pistol but then saw the Hammond Game Getter cartridges for all makes of rifles. Genius really, check them out. When not bow hunting I bring these

How is the accuracy? I see only one perjectile for 7mm,

I kinda like the pellet pistol hanging off my hip...cool Wild West factor.

About the same as a .22 for range, maybe a tad less. Don't use it much as I'm concentrated on big game and the only grouse I usually see are flushed up from me walking. You have to load it in the same as a loose cartridge. Good for shots you can take your time with. Sorry no pics

As for what type of air pistol, it is really about personal preference and style. That said, I would make sure that it shoots a pointed pellet instead of the round BBs.

Some of the cheaper pistols are manually activated to load with air and not worth anything. Make sure you get one that has the air cartridge. Also know that only the first 5 or so shots will have the maximum FPS listed. After that, the air pressure in the cartridge is reduced and they get noticeably slower.

I believe some of the models also have a rifled barrel for accuracy. Might be something to consider.

I use the old style crossman pump BB rifle. Many grouse have been taken with it and I'm not sure they even sell them anymore

I carry sub sonic cast bullet loads while grouse hunting - easy to do if you are a hand loader- a number of places sell cast bullets for popular calibers

I have shot a few with my webley tempest. The 177 doesn't really have enough power to anchor them reliably. Suggest a 22 cal with flat pellets to break bones. A buddy has one and it works well.

Reality is it still makes enough noise to spook big game within earshot.

Also, make sure you aim at the body/wing butt...nothing worse than finding a starved grouse that had its beak or crop shot off.

A Crossman 2240 (.22) is hard to beat except when its cold as it is Co2 powered but as far accuracy and energy is concerned I find it works well. I have 2, one is completely stock and holster able and the other has a few minor modifications. I added a steel breach and an 18" barrel as well as a shoulder stock. The steel breach allowed me to mount a scope on to the unit. It's surprisingly very accurate. I've head shot a number of grouse with this model to ranges up to 20 yards no problem. I even fed a muskrat a long drink of silence with it last fall after it took a chunk out of my dogs cheek and put the run on my wife.

I look on utube the game getter cartridge, it seem to be too noisy for me...
So I look at the crosman 2240, it seem to be pretty good.
Is anyone know any other air pistol caliber .22? I could not find any...

I went down hw45 route but now the Alecto...it has mad power potential, easy to bring right to the limit in .22 cal with 3-4 strokes, use a chrony, in .177 running heavy pellets 10.3 to 10.5 gr you can run to the limit on 3 and go well over on four

Anyhow, very accurate and powerful...Google away, it is the real deal of air pistol hunting

Sadly the thing still weighs over 2 lbs...one can splurge on a pack rifle from prophet river and shoot cci quiet and 40 gr at 700 fps and it only weighs 1lb

When I hunted big game with my 50 caliber hawken black powder I would load a 28 gauge plastic shotgun sleeve with number 6 shot worked like a dam on grouse.

Just bought the .177 cal yesterday, ten yards bang on, punches holes in cans easily, shattered a bottle so it punches hard enough to kill grouse/squirrels etc 10 yards or less for sure.
89 bucks at Canadian tire.

I use the Walther CP88. Works good. I got a grouse on a branch from around 5-7 yards away. Where I hunt you usually don't see them till you're literally 2' away and I just pull it out of my rubber hunting boots and pop! Easy lunch!
