Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 here. Plenty of scope for general deer hunting.

6 x 42 old burris my go to 7mm very bright no fiddling solid reliable
1.5 x 5 vx3 my #2 .280 with a shorter barrel in the cover. Usually left on 5x
4 x bushnell on a 303 if the above 2 fail. cheap, ugly, it works. Rather not use it on game (lead in bullets) but fun for targets.
open sights on my 6.5 x 55 if the above 3 fail.

if you are shooting smaller game or varmints with a rest then perhaps more than 6x, 6x or less is fine for big game, stalk or attempt to shoot within 250 yards , relax, find a stable position, know where your bullet is going and + marks the spot. Bullet travel is frequently affected by wind, vegetation and slope which vary along the path from your barrel to the target when hunting in the outdoors. Keep your bullets trajectory visible, clear and predictable from barrel to target. Easier done than said..

That's a great choice! Good manufacturer and a very useful magnification range. Have had a few scopes now and find if it's over 10x max magnification or > 3 x magnification range, I really prefer having parallax which adds plenty of cost, weight and magnification to get the same optical quality...

Have yet to shoot a deer at max magnification with any of the rifles I've spent some money for no good reason...

I have a 2.5-10 x42 on my .308 and a 3.5-14 x 50 on my .300 I like those scopes for what I have them for...my .308 is a deer rifle most of my shots at deer are under 200...when I go for big game most of my shots have been at the 250- 300 mark. Get the best scope you can afford and in the power ranges that you like and use that. The big thing is to not shoot outside your comfort zone. I shoot at a metal gong at 650 at the range for fun but I do not shoot beyond 300 when hunting just because I don't feel confident in ETHICALLY taking an animal at that distance.

You could be flinching or shooting a rifle with a warm barrel which can cause your bullet to slightly rise like the first picture. Could also be your breathing. When shooting its best to go through the same motions everytime. I for example take 4 slow breaths and partially exhale on my last one and ssssqqqquuueezzzzeee the the trigger.

I have always used a straight 6x on all my big game rifles. Never felt the need for anything else. Shot stuff at 10 yards to 400 yards and never felt the need for any more or less magnification. Using Zeiss and Leupold.

Swaro Z5 3.5-18x44
Vortex PST 4-12x50

In my opinion best bang for your buck currently is the Cabela's EURO rifle scopes which are produced by Meopta. When on sale you can walk w/ one for $400 ish that will cover you in all situations. (Have one on my rimfire...best value purchase in hind sight) Cheers!
