Default Identify this picture

I was going to put this in the "live wildlife pics" thread that is running in the Hunting section
but did not want to change the subject.

So as a quiz…….what is this?

Too well illuminated - it's the south end of a northbound sage grouse

The endangered Sage Brush Grouse, the scourge of Ranchers in the Maple Creek and Cypress Hills area.

I believe they have started a rather unsuccessful hatching program at the Calgary zoo.
Apparently reintroducing cougars to the area has not gone well for the species.

Interesting bird, the largest of the grouse species I believe.

Haven't eaten one in just about forever. IIRC one that mature would not be the most palatable of the grouse species. I think they taste worse than spruce grouse. I think that the reason they taste like crap is because they do not have a gizzard and only eat soft stuff like sage.

Well, I guess that was just too easy. As everyone has mentioned that's kind of a bum shot of a strutting male Greater Sage Grouse on it's lek in southern Alberta. This rather unusual picture is one of a series of photos I took back in late sixties.

Very nice! I've never hunted southern Alberta, so I've never seen one in person.

They sure are a pretty bird. Very cool vocalizations. Under appreciated in my opinion.
Kind of like the spruce grouse. When in full plumage they are a very striking bird.

I remember as a kid there used to be lots of sage grouse around, we even had a lek out behind the house. It was neat to watch them dance, but it’s survival of the strong and those birds aren’t the smartest bird around. Mother Nature can be cruel.

Awesome pictures! The only sage grouse I have ever seen have been in September and October. Thanks for sharing!
