Default Rangefinder selection help neded

Reaching out for some assistance finding a good used or new rangefinder

Criteria as follows
$300 max price
Mainly used in the gopher patch. Also for deer hunting with a rifle
Do not require extra features, just better glass
I do not shoot over 300 yards even at targets

I realize your getting what you pay for with glass, just looking for the best basic unit with decent glass that is accurate.
I like vortex products (for the warranty) and have some of their products.
Have looked at the Impact 850 and would like to hear feedback on that model.

Thank you in advance

I have no experience even holding that model so I’m no help there.

I have three different rangefinders. One of them, the glass seems to be a little foggy, and I may see about getting it cleaned up. The one I like the best is my midrange but one major drawback to it, it only reads in black. Lower light, overcast days, dark targets, it becomes harder to read. A bit of advice with that is to be sure it has a colored indicator inside, red, green, etc.

I am not a Vortex fan but for non-critical applications, if you buy used stick to the Vortex. Most other range finders have at most a 5 year warranty and none I know of are transferable to the next owner. You can get the lowest end Vortex in your price range or one of their higher end ones used.

You can also buy Leica used in the $350 range and for glass you will never find better. I have one 1200 CRF that is over 15 years old with tons of use and never a problem. We own a dozen of them between 3 of us and have never had to send one back for repairs.

I agree with trying to find a used Leica. By far the best and simplest rangefinder I have used. I have seen 1000-B Models for $300 used. The glass is excellent and compared to the Leupold and Vortex models I used to have, they are much easier at ranging small targets.

I just picked up a sig 1000 at Cabela’s on sale for 249 awesome rangefinder for the price. Ranges out 1000 no problem. Small and compact. I would definitely look at one. If you feel like spending more they have lots of options up from the 1000.

How is the glass in your new one. I tried a couple of Sigs a few years ago and I found the glass quality to be pretty poor. Have they improved them?

The glass in my 2 year old Sig is better than the glass in my 4 year old Leupold.
Sig Kilo 850 and Leupold RX1000i

Thanks for all the information.
I have been watching for Leica rangefinders but it seems like most people hang on to them or if they are for sale they get scooped up in a hurry.

You’ll have to look around for one. Various buy and sells, Facebook etc. but you’ll find one.

I bought a used LRF 800 over 10 years ago for about $300 and it’s been flawless ever since. The only time it didn’t give me a range the first time I push the button was on an antelope hunt in heavy fog. Previously I had bushnell, Nikon and leupold and the Leica was significantly better then the other three. Before I left Canada last year I bought a spare which was a LRF 900 scan for $200 off kijiji and it’s waiting in my bow case for the day I need it. Keep your eyes open and you’ll find one for a smoking deal.
