Default Hare coursing

Is hare coursing legal in AB? Looking for a cursory answer, not having time to read through regs at the moment.

Legal to hunt hares and rabbits as a resident at all times of the year. Regarding coursing... On private property you can probably get away with it if you can control your dog. Less so on public.

Thing is, the second the dogs turn after a deer or other wildlife, they can (and very well may be) shot by anyone, and you the owner are guilty of harassing wildlife. If it runs cattle or horses, you are in for a world of hurt.

Beagles are well known as deer chasing idiots that don’t listen or recall well. Much less of a problem with well trained bird dogs. Owners choice but don’t expect any leeway

TOMMY
So what's coursing?

TURKISH
They set two lurchers, they are dogs
before you ask, on a hare, that's
the big rabbit. And the hare has to
outrun the dogs.

TOMMY
What happens if he doesn't?

TURKISH
Well the big rabbit gets $#@*ed
doesn't it?

Couldn't resist

Yes, I'm not thinking or worried about Beagles. I know I can do Beagling and I'm well aware of what happens if they chase other wildlife or livestock. I was wondering if sight hounds could be used. I was thinking of linking up with a sight hound. Beagles to flush. Sight hound to run it down.

If dogs manage to catch the Hare its a sad sight. Hare screaming while its ripped apart.
Not a very humane death.

Some include a falcon - who actually kills the rabbit. The dogs (sight hounds) spot a jack and give chase. You release the bird who swoops in and kills the jack rabbit (this isn't sucessfull ever time). If the dogs are properly raised/trained they respect the bird and leave it alone not trying to claim the kill.

Don’t really see how that changes anything in real life though.

Heard of a guy using wolf hounds(?) on coyotes, on bald prairie where there’s much less chance of problems with other wildlife or property boundaries. Ok, I guess, but a 243 is cheaper to feed.

In all honesty I think you have been reading too many old books that kind of thing has been gone for years and isn’t likely to reappear.
