Default Rut possibly here already

Just wondering what everyone is seeing for activity. I have seen a few bucks in 536-535 with some swollen necks already, and following a short distance behind does. Seems way earlier this year. Thoughts?

Saw 5 bucks together yesterday. They were screwing around rubbing horns.

Define “Rut”

Are you referring to the actual breeding of does in estrus? (Deer Rut)
Or…
Are you talking about deer behaviour driven by herd dynamics? (Hunters Rut)

Those batchelor groups will stay intact of course, until the local does start coming into esterus, then the rodeo will begin as the batchelor groups break up

Your over thinking it and very common behavior for late October

Bucks begin showing preparation for the rut in late September even. I have pics of bucks showing neck swelling weeks back

Without fail, mid-Nov is peak rut for the areas I hunt. I suspect this year will be no different.

X2. It is almost Nov. 1 after all.

Default Rut

Possibly over thinking lol, the bucks that I have seen are all alone, and not far behind the does. Seems a bit odd compared to what I usually see lol. Guess my experience repertoire is expanding

Bucks are still in groups.

Smaller bucks will be more interested in the does to start, big boys will move in around 2 weeks from now and punt them out of the herd.

Necks are starting to swell, both deer we took last week had thick necks.

I'm seeing a fair bit of pre-rut activity.

Not all out rutting activity, not yet, but they are deffinitaly thinking about what is about to happen.

Nope, the rut will be the same time as it has been for thousands of years.

Deer would not survive as a species if the fawns were born too early or late.

OMG!
You mean the lunar phase, and the weather doesn’t drive when the rut happens!?!?!

I suppose you’re one of those photoperiodism believers………..

By the by, since the Deer aren't rutting yet, I know a place where about a thousand ducks have been feeding in the same field for over a week now.

Keg it appears the ducks as well as the geese have been enjoying the good Peace River weather this fall. I could not believe the number of flocks of geese going south over the trap line yesterday.
Rut?? moose will rut September,October and November, depends on definition.

The ducks left here last night. Everything is under the snow now.
But I expect there are lots on Lac Cardinal yet.

Yeah, what we call the rut is only part of the story. I've seen Moose and Deer mating as late as mid January.

They may not be calling but they will sometimes come to a call well past the end of the official rut.

Same thing before the rut, both Deer and Moose will some times come to a call well before the official rut starts.

One thing I have learned, there are no hard fast rules in the world of wild animals. No matter how much I learn about them they still surprise me every once in a while.

I have seen a couple WT Bucks in the last 2 days locked in on doe's. Its definitely starting!

What a difference it is being in a field with a Buck that's on a doe versus a buck that's alone. They obviously have one thing on their mind!

It’s not a magical switch that starts the rut for all the deer at once but instead it’s spread out and varies from area to area especially south to north

Just because a few deer are getting going doesn’t mean it’s full out rut
