Default Fishing excursion Northern Sask...

Hey all,
Buddy and I are looking at doing a 50th Birthday excursion to Northern Sask sometime this June to September. Looking for the below:

1. Small cabin for 2
2. Boat rental or can bring my 14 foot lund 9.9HP with us depending on rental cost.
3. 8-10 hour drive from Calgary ( Planning on 7 days in total)
4. Best time for fishing between June to September and weather based on these months.

Just looking for some recommendations....

Cheers

What are you looking to fish? Anglers Trail Resort on Lac La Plonge has decent lake trout and pike fishing and the beaver river is 10 minutes from the lodge and offers excellent walleye fishing. 4 hours drive from Lloyd.

What species are priority? Dore would be a good bet but it would be pretty booked up early in June already. Besnard Lodges book up too earlier in the season in June.

Wont be disappointed.

Little longer of a drive but the fishing is excellent.

If looking for bigger walleye I'd go to Dore. Besnard the walleye are much smaller. Pike are fun at Besnard in September tho.

For bigger walleye you are better off in the central, southern part of the province. Tobin, Last Mountain, SS at Elbow. Might get more walleye fish north but on average are smaller which is ok if your priority is fish fries. If your looking for big fish (walleye especially) you have a a real chance at a 10 plus in the central, south.

you could try here https://kamkotalodge.com/ tons of walleye. When we went the walleye fishing was very good but not many pike.

Otter lake at Missinipe... They also do fly outs from there for the day or more to even more remote lakes if you want something like that, but the lake itself is awesome... Fished here many a time with buddies. We always go during the first couple weeks of June and the action is non-stop!

I'd pick a lake that is appropriate for the size of the boat - some of the bigger open lakes without too many islands to get out of the wind may be a little risky. Hate to pick the week when it's windy .... it's happened to us where we got out only one day on such a trip due to weather with a small vessel.

That’s another reason I like Besnard lake, lots of islands etc to get out of the wind if it does pick up only thing is you really got to pay attention to the structure below, lots of props and lower legs have been damaged.

I'll 3rd Besnard Lake Lodge but take a guide to avoid rocks. As mentioned above the walleye size isn't huge but good fishing all around. Guides are worth every cent for the shore lunch, rock avoidance and lake knowledge.

Cabins book up quick though and may not match your timeframe.

Another option which works great is to launch your boat at the campground, load it up full of gear, tent, stove etc and go find a nice secluded island to hunker down for a few days.
If needed buy fire wood at Colin’s camp and I am sure if you ask they might even let you keep your vehicle/trailer there’s too.
Kinda a neat adventure with no cell service

Colins Camp and Besnard Lake Lodge are both owned by the same family now. Great people to deal with.

A little bit closer and not “fantastic” fishing but you’ll catch fish for sure.
Waterhen lake has always been good to us, tawaw cabins if you want to look them up. Cabins run down a lot from the old days so if you want rustic you found it.

Its been about 5 years since I was at Waterhen but great pike fishing and good walleye fishing. Spinner rigs were king at this lake, for pike and walleye. Had some titanium rigs tied up for the pike. Nice launch, a store that sold gas as well, overall this was a good resort with good to very good fishing.

Hey Bob, you probably haven't heard but Osprey Wings has shut down. They are looking to sell but currently don't have a buyer. It's will have a huge impact on anyone who utilizes float planes anywhere in North central Sask.

http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=418575

We are sure hoping for someone to step up and re-start the business as we have very few options to get to our cabin in the open water season. This of course doesn't effect anyone wanting to fish the multitude of lakes accessible from the road.

To the OP, my favorite time to fish the area is fall, from the end of September till mid October.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. Decided to book a cabin at Green lake lodge for June 4-9th. My dad went up there annually for 13 years and had a great time. Anyone been fishing here that can give us some tips. Best bait to pack and how much. spoons, bottom bouncers? etc.

Pretty excited to get away on a trip like this..

A lot of fish will still be in the Beaver River that time of year. Standard jig and a leech will catch, but lots of things work both in the river and in Green Lake itself. I'd concentrate on the river first and if that doesn't pan out then try bottom bouncing on the lake. The fish move a lot as there's not much for major points. Lots of eater sized walleye usually once you find em.

I usually fish just a bit north of this and at that time of year the water is still really cold and ice has not been off long. I am always cruising the shorelines thrown big spoons and lures into and near weedbeds for large pike or tossing plastics and jigging minnows down to maybe 25/30 feet or so for walleye. The rare time it gets a little slow I find slow trolling around shore with a variety of lures until you get into some walleye and then start jigging again always works.

Sometimes too just for fun we will throw top water frogs etc into the the weeds for pike and the action is a blast!
