Default Please ignore my ignorance and answer the question

Can a gunsmith convert/change my 7mm STW or 300 win mag into 7mm PRC?

If yes, then what needs to be done and how much it may cost for the barrel and gunsmithing roughly?

What gun do you have? It might be easy for you to do it yourself.

Short answer yes they all have the same bolt face and are long actions.

Check with JC Custom barrels…JC can likely build you a shouldered prefit barrel for the 75. I believe they are the same as the Tikka.
When last we spoke he had a 7 PRC reamer on the way.

What would be the advantage going from a stw to a prc?

That’s the question that I have to ask myself! I have a hankering for the 7 PRC, but I already own a STW. It’s perfectly happy pushing 175’s to 3150 fps. Mine is a
9” twist so it is not likely going to be compatible with heavier bullets though. I would expect the modern PRC case design will be more accurate and a bit less finicky to load for. I’m completely out of magazine space to get close to the lands of my REM 700 with many bullets, so the shorter case would help that issue.

Basically I have been holding off due to the complete lack of brass. The 6.5 PRC has been around for a few years now and brass is still very difficult to locate.

Truly curious, why would converting to PRC ruin the Sako?

you could. It would between $800-$1000 depending what barrel and who puts it on.

What grain bullets does your STW's like? If you knew the twist rates of them that may help you make up your mind what one to rebarrel.

If it was me, I would keep the 300 WIN MAG as is, and turn one of your STW's into a 7PRC to run 180's if you were looking to change this up. To get the best results for a 7PRC you would want a 1-8 twist barrel.

Depends on the barrel profile of the rifles. If the chamber has some extra length, a smith could cut off an inch and ream a 7 prc chamber in your 7mm barrels. If thats possible, with chamber dimensions and barrel shank, that's the cheapest route since you won't have to buy a barrel.

But be better to just start from new with a fresh barrel.

Thanks a lot for the great information guys.
I have decided not to rebarrel any of my guns to 7mm PRC at all.
These are all good guns and I am going to either keep them or sell them and I will buy a new 7mm PRC. Just need to sell some

Any one interested in buying any can contact me by PM. Thanks
