Default Travel rod as carry on

Hey guys, I'm heading to Mexico in a few days and I will be taking some gear with me this time.
Just want to ask what length of rod tube guys have been getting away with as carry on. I know they have set dimensions for bags, but its a 36"x3" rod tube.

I have travelled 3 -4 times per year with tubes up to 32" (designed for 4 piece 9 foot fly rods and 3 piece 7 foot spin rods) as carry on to several different destinations (including Mexico) on pretty much all the major commercial airlines servicing Alberta in the past few years with out any hassles from anyone.

I would take the 36" tube,,, you may be asked to store it in the front closet instead of an overhead bin, but at any rate it will still be in the main cabin instead of who knows where when it goes into baggage.

I've taken a 40" fly-rod style case with me as carry on and no issues. Mind you, it was a domestic flight.
