That would be frickin awesome. A still have a few breasts, but as typical, they are the first to disappear from the freezer. I experienced that first year they opened up Beaverhill lake for hunting. Utter madness in bird numbers. A crane season along the Saskatchewan border would be nothing less than magical.

The March issue of Alberta Outdoorsmen has a couple of articles on the crane season including an interview with Minister Nixon who talks about it. Sounds like it's going to happen!

Now try to source decoys! The plants in China are down and US distributors have no idea if they'll get stock.

We have been down this road before,,,, I will believe it when we see the official 2020 regs published / posted.

Waterfowl regs need both fed and prov stamps of approval,,, and this Covid 19 stuff has turned really govt depts inside out and upside down,,, here's hoping that it stays on track!!!

I've commented on this in the past.

There is a continental allocation on the harvest of waterfowl. They are managed internationally ( Canada, US MX). If for example the management of tundra swans suggest a harvest of 5000 is sustainable then States that allow a hunt divide up that number. If Alberta doesn't have a hunt then their allocation is given to some other jurisdiction.

Met a few old guys who say swan taste good but I have also met someone who thought mergansers were the best meat out there.

I think swan and crane are worth trying at least once give the chance but if I did not like it I would not hunt them again

Never eaten one, however Swan used to be reserved the Royalty only in England. In fact the Queen is till the owner/protector of all the Swans in the UK. They are known as the"Royal bird" Don't think she eats them though.

I knew a guy in England who accidentally shot one and his Lab retrieved it.

Every time he tried to hide it in the bulrushes the dog would go get it again.

He was a bit of a BS kind of guy though.

Seeing that Alberta has now listed Sandhill Cranes a Game Bird as of 12/12/19 (previously listed as a Non-game Animal)….

And that Alberta has listed a Sandhill Crane hunting season in the regulations,

Yes! My bet is that there will be a Crane season in 2020!

Game Bird Seasons and Bag Limits
Sandhill Crane
Daily limit - 5
Possession limit - 15

WMU 200-208, 220, 222, 226-242, 248-260, 500
S1-D16

WMU 102-106, 112-166, 210
S8-D21

Now to get Swans opened up!

Default never tried them but popular in the USA

called ribeye of the sky!
Warned not to try using a retriever on them unless stone cold dead as wounded cranes try to take dogs eyes out when incoming to retrieve.

guess the days of using ones imagination and making yer own are going to have to return , best are to make yer own , we all have access to the materials to make our own decoys and be successful with them
only our imaginations hold us back

We shoot and eat cranes when hunting in Sask. Really a good eating bird. Best are the ones with a lot of brown feathering, the juvvies.
Do'not over cook them!

We like to send inexperienced members of the group in to dispatch cranes. An event that is sure to top thier hunting tales for years to come. But yea, that beak can do damage.

This... we only eat the juvvies and I think they cut like prime rib and have the same texture. Great taste. We do them on a solid griddle, rubbed with oil and done just barely med rare. You will like them.

During our early season hunt in 507 we see them by the thousand. Typically very high but, there is always that one day they seem to be just above the tree tops and we see the odd bunch feeding in a field. I'd be interested to see what how tasted.
