Default Have you hunted Pronghorn in Montana or Wyoming?

Hi folks,

I am writing a piece for Alberta Outdoorsmen Magazine on hunting Pronghorn in Alberta. (I entered the 2021 draw with priority 12, and am anxiously awaiting the draw announcement next week.)

Who here has decided to hunt Antelope south of the border?

And can you share your experience?

Thanks,

Tim

AB results are up on the RELM Ap.

I got drawn for Montana antelope this season. Looking forward to heading down for the first time. 3 year draw.

Its been on my bucket list ever since I worked in Wyoming and saw the amount of speed goats they have. First I spent time in Pinedale and Big Piney and thought there was lots. Then jobs moved to Kemmerer and wow! Antelope all over the place!

Over 40 years ago....WOW...we went to SE Montana to hunt antelope, and as archery hunters we didn't need to enter the draw. Don't know if that is still the case. But we worked hard and filled 3 out of 4 tags.

Yes I killed a goat in WY about 7 years ago with a bow. What info are you after?

We did the Montana antelope hunt in 1990 or 91. Forsyth if I recall correctly.
We ended up with 2 bucks and one doe. It was a fun hunt.

I hunted antelope in Wyoming way back in 1985. Got my best antelope to date. It was a much better hunting experience than the hunts I have been on in Alberta.

I’ve hunted WY twice for pronghorn and I’ll do it again. I only moved back to Alberta after a few years away in 2011 and I’m only now at the point I could start to draw a tag. By the time I draw another it’ll likely be my last.

It’s a great hunt and the public land access there makes it easier to do. You’re always looking at goats and I feel like I’m just starting to get a handle on what a “good” antelope is (to me anyway).

Another year or two and I’ll head back south again.

Been to wyoming 4 times bowhunting with 4 different outfitters and saw a ton of animals every hunt and always successful. Hunts were cheap for outfitted hunts. Likely go again next year

Default What is Cheap?

Muzzy, when you say cheap can you quantify? What is an all in price?

Thanks
Tony

I have been twice to WY, self guided. We camp on public land and do the trip for $1500 per person all in. Great hunt. They have a priority system similar to ours so you need a few years priority to get into a zone with trophy potential and lots of public land.

Outfitter took care of the draws for us. Have to get your permit to bring firearm down. No problem bringing meat and cape back. Just make sure skull has most meat and brain removed. Here are three from our group, nine of us went down and we all got goats. Was a three day hunt.

WY system is very similar to ours, you can set up a hunter ID and then apply for preference points. When you want to draw you can pay more money to enter a preference draw that takes fewer preference points to draw, or keep building points for the regular draw
. There is videos on YouTube. You can PM me for more specific info if you want.

Once you get your tag you apply for a firearms permit from the US Federal government. After that it is crazy easy to cross the border. We didn't even have to get out of our pickup at either border crossing.

Six of us went to Wyoming in 2019. I forget the zone, but it was just north of Gillette. Lots of goats. Would of been nice if there was more public land in that zone. As far as bringing guns over it’s a simple form from the ATF. I’ve hunted Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas a few times and have never had a problem. The only time I’ve had my guns and paper work looked at was on the Wyoming trip. Now hopefully they open the border to us. I’d really like to hunt Texas again this winter!
