Default Hunting in high winds

I have a mule deer tag for a unit in the Crowsnest area. I didn’t have a chance to scout before the season so turning up a buck this weekend was tricky. Although I saw quite a few muley does on my first day. It was super windy both days. I feel like the deer must be used to it down there, but do you guys have any tips for hunting in high winds. Also, I thought the high winds would make the wind direction predictable. Turns out, nope. Lots of swirling happening.

I killed a whitetail buck in the high wind on Thursday evening. Didn't seem to bother that deer at all.

Put your nose into the wind. Use your binoculars and move slowly forward.

High wind one of the best times to hunt. I have walked right in on herds of elk. The wind ruins their radar/hearing and dilutes your smell regardless of direction even if you have not showered in days.

Put your nose in the wind, and still hunt. Use your binoculars often, steady as she goes.

Yes, as mentioned above, I too have walked right into elk bedded down, deer either snoozing or munching away as well. I'm a putz in the bush and the wind has helped me numerous times! I have been successful this way and I have also missed plenty of opportunities by not being ready

It seems obvious now but I learned the hard way that a crosswind really effects the bullet path. Even at 200 yards a Southern Alberta crosswind can push a bullet a foot off target.

What wind? It's either been perfectly calm down here, or am I used to it by now? My non-southern Alberta friends do ask me why I lean to the west when I walk

Kidding aside, some of my best hunts have been in the wind, and November it isn't usually from one single direction. If you aren't used to it, it can throw a guy off a bit. Helps a clumsy and smelly guy like me avoid detection though

Leaves blowing around, bushes rattling, grass shaking - all that movement will mask your still-hunting.
