Default Advice. Son Hunting. Need a gun. Have a 270 with a Swar Z5 BT

So my 15 year old is hunting this year. He has his pal, win and hunters Ed.

I have a weatherby 270 v2 with a swarovski Z5 3.5 x 18 ballistic. I bought the scope to one day upgrade the gun. However I have about 30 boxes of 270 ammo.

Not sure if I should just pick up another 270 with a decent scope or move up to a larger caliber and move the scope over and buy a decent scope for the 270.

I have hunted deer, moose and elk with the 270.

Thanks for the advice.

I buy another larger calibre, 7mm rem mag, 30-06 or 300 win for yourself and move the z5 onto it.

Let your son use your 270 and put a decent scope on it, Leupold vx3 for around $800. Then you have 2 set ups one being a little better for the bigger stuff you hunt.

I vote to get another 270. It would be nice if you and your son could share ammo. Would make it easier. Sounds like you’ve had success with your 270. No need to switch away from a good thing.

Thanks for the advice.

In the end it came down to ammo availability.

I decided on a 7mm Rem Mag and then tried to find ammo for it. Seems it is a very rare expensive thing.

I pulled out a couple ammo boxes that housed my 270 ammo. Turns out I have about 25 boxes of 270 and I go through less than a box a year. This made the decision easy.

I bought a brand new unfired Weatherby vangaurd series 2 in 270 win.
Its in an ugly ish blaze pattern but I got it for $650 and the great guy through in scope rings.

I then bought a burris fullfield from a buddy who had it just sitting in his gunsafe new and never used for $350.0

Total is $1000 all in and my buddy who has everything will mount and bore sight the scope and then its off to the range.

I may buy him a weatherby removable magazine kit later.

I am quite happy with the decision. We may paint the stock later but for now its golden!!!

The infamous Blaze Camo LOL. I bought one in 243 for a friends kid in 243win, when Wholesale Sports had them on for $399. They are a good rifle, but the paint job didn't sell well, so they went on sale, and were a great bargain.

Good choice! I think you'll enjoy shooting that Weatherby.

there is nothing wrong with a 270, my dad has killed piles of elk, moose and deer with his
He only got the 6,5 PRC because his 270 is no longer accurate
With the right bullet in the right place that gun will kill almost everything

If starting from scratch I would probably go 7mm. To keep it in the family with a 270 already I would go 270. Not too much a 270 can't handle
