And that’s a wrap to this adventure!
What a blast we had.

Now to fix, repair and repeat!

Forgot to mention we were sitting in 140 fow, steep drop from 60-170 fow.

On my sons trip due to the wind we had two dead sticks out with big herring on and in the tent we used tubes and the rip and glide wonder bread.

Most hits were 120 and to the bottom in which they would chase to the bottom and usually got picked off, only a few would hit mid water column but showed interest so we played cat and mouse.

The green pickle and solid white Tc moto tipped with a shinner seemed to be the ticket for tubes.

What a beauty day on the ice!
Sitting in the sun with a slight breeze and the fish are getting bigger!

Guess the size?

Well ended up icing 7 and lost 3 but the first three were a 32, 29 and 28 so I was happy with that as a start.
All on a white tube with a shinner attached just taping the bottom at 140 fow.
They would come in from about 100 fow and I would reel up to them and have them chase to the bottom in which I either got a bite and missed the hook set, which happened a lot today, rookie hook setter!

Hopefully tomorrows weather is nice too!

Very nice fish, nice being out there when the weather is good. How are the snow/flood water conditions?

A foot or so of snow and no flood water just gotta watch out for pressure ridges.
Good thick ice 18 inches or more depending how close to shore you are.

Thinking of trying for Lakers this weekend, probably from the provincial park side. How is the ice and snow from that access point. is it good to go with a superduty? whats the ice thickness? This will be our first time ever fishing Cold Lake, nervous and excited!!!

The access from there is good, 18-20 plus inches of ice depending where you drill and how far from shore but good thick ice.

Snow depths should not be a problem as I am seeing a foot or so max and a few inches in other areas.

The thing now is the mid day temps if they get around 0 or warmer and the sun beating down you will sink and then spin on bare ice, if you got chains use them, studded tire etc.

Now there are a few ice heaves here and there that are drifted in so move about on the side of caution if breaking trail as you will get high centered.
Trust me when I say I have seen many vehicles limping off the ice with broken drive shafts, transfer cases etc

I know the smell of overheated transmissions too

If you have the options of moving around on the ice on a ATV or skidoo that would be my plan just to minimize the headaches and enjoy the trip more.

March is a great time to target many species out on the lake.

Good luck.

The other thing I forgot to mention is if it is a sunny warm day the provincial park boat launch is on a rather steep hill and come mid day or later getting off the ice could be an issue.
Past seasons it is really slippery and soon becomes rutted up toss into the mixture of jackknifed trailers etc so just another concern.
That being said maybe the marina would be better because if there is an issue the city will sand it etc within a reasonable time as with the parks you might be waiting for longer.

Well sitting in the sun, soaking in the rays, catching smeadiums so far.
A few guys from Athabaska fished with me and the one fella got a 32 incher which was nice a he never fished for lakers before.
Again 130 fow and a little deeper seemed to produce the best results.

Thumbs up

It’s official, got my first sunburn yesterday afternoon kicking back soaking in the rays

As for lakers...meh...iced four...lazy buggers would kinda chase but then again I was zoned out too.

Met a few fellas yesterday and their report was the same, always nice chatting with people who are on the forum too.

Gonna keep at it as the weather is awesome.

Gas, grub and goooooo.

Well fishing partner got back from Palm Springs chomping at the bit to get out.
Great day, clear sunny skies with a slight breeze and in the plus temps so can’t complain plus the lakers were active too!
We set up on a real steep drop from 70-150fow real quick but we decided to sit in 90fow as that was super active with bait and lakers.
The decision paid off and in no time we started catching, eating pizza and listening to the oilers game! Buggers won.

Gotta luv March on the ice!

It’s so funny when the bite is off that I go back to the white tube which for some reason picks them off in no time flat!
I take a shinner hooked through the eyes on the main hook and the stinger treble has one hook in the tail.
Works like a charm.

Laker candy I call it!

Well today was a run, gun, drill and drop day.
Centre bay, French bay, cold river, island, north bay cabins just drilling and checking out the lake structure in general.
One area had me going around in circles but pinned it down to 65 fow surrounded by steep drops and lakers galore!
Couldn’t give it a full go due to other areas needed checking out but I will return there and hunker down for a day to give it a fair shake.

Had to put a new white tube on as it was chewed up real bad.
Wonder bread didn’t disappoint either.

This tube with minnows was the ticket today!

The stinger was key to success as very few ate the complete tube!

Got to meet a few more from the forum today, dialled in their electronics so you could actually see better what was going on.

Great times.
