Default Saltpetre

So supposing a feller wanted to make his own black powder….
We made it when we were kids, got the saltpetre from the local corner store and the sulphur at the druggist.

It seems mighty difficult to get pure saltpetre nowadays… anyone have any ideas?

I’ve looked at stump remover, I don’t think it’s the pure stuff?

This brings back memories. I didn't hurt myself nor anyone else,,,but came close to burning a shed down almost 60 years ago.

I addition to fashioning my own gunpowder from saltpeter, charcoal and sulfur also made rocket propellent out of saltpeter and sugar

Default Saltpeter

If Captain Kirk can whip up a batch to fight the monster, it shouldn’t be that hard to do now. Lol. Just look under some rocks. Lol

Gone are the days of innocent cherry bombs, and home made louder versions. Why you ask?
Some heinous acts that turned into acts of murder is why……

Ammonium nitrate fertilizers are very controlled now, think Oklahoma City.
Sodium Chlorate has been all but banned thanks to the IRA.

Potassium nitrate. Also used for meat tenderizing and junior chemist sets.
Hopefully that helps you.

A few old army shenanigans produced CRAZY smoke bombs but found diy mixes to be very hard to be homogenous or reliable as a propellant.

Black powder doesn’t have the energy to detonate. In a garage it would probably be a flash and fire unless you had a large container of it strong enough to build up pressure as it deflagrates then you’d get a bang. I’d be more worried about the gas and propane tanks causing a garage mushroom cloud. Lol

Ah yes, the episode where he battled the Gorn. Classic Trek. Just randomly throwing handfuls of sulfur and charcoal into a bamboo tube, throwing a handful of diamonds on top, and lighting the whole thing off with a flint, striking it with a communicator to light his rag on fire and set the whole thing off.

Easy peasy.
