Default The firearm you killed your first big game animal with??

Sometimes it’s nice to reminisce a bit. 35 years ago I shot my first big animal (whitetail) with a Remington 760 in .30-06. It was given to me by my Father who first received it from his Father. It’s also part of a Remington set that was handed down to me with the .30-06. Do you still have your first big game rifle or know it’s whereabouts?

Meet the Trombone sisters lol:

First big game animal was a WT deer with a savage 99E in 308 with a bushnell 4X scope and winchester 150gr silver tip ammo.

I remember the day very well, it was November of 1974 and was in the pasture along the battle river on the farm where my father in law was born and raised near Caruthers Saskatchewan.

The farm was at the time was owned by his brother, who was a Batchelor, we used to all stay with him in the house trailer on the farm and hunt, was a great time.

308 Savage. Dad gave it to me for my 16th birthday. It came from his step brother who hunted with it. My first big game animal was a WT doe at 16 with dad by my side. My son took his first big game animal with it at 19, this moose, with me by his side. He took his first WT buck with it in 2021 and his first MD buck this past November, both with me by his side. Lots of memories tied to this rifle. Taken many animals over the years.

I still only hunt with it and I am 55 now. Until my son gets his own, I use my dads 30 06 when my son & I hunt together. Cool thread.

My first big game kill came with a bow, however with a firearm, it was my dads savage 99c in 308 with a fixed 4 power scope. Loved that gun and regret selling it every single day.

These are cool stories for sure. Ironically my other heirloom is a 1965 Savage 99c in .308 handed down to me from Father. He got it from my Grandmother on my Mom's side. Grandma wasn't scared of a steel buttplate in a light levergun. LOL

Model 70 ranger 243. Whitetail buck my uncle rattled in for me to about 50 yards.

First chickens were from my dads beauty old Savage 24 .22/20g, while he was cruising back home from a successful moose hunt near Whitecourt.

He wanted me to use the .22 but there was a group of them together so held on the middle one and shot the shotshell instead. Killed 2 nice ruffies with the shot. Needless to say I was hooked.

A moose with a Winchester 88 in 308 - 1973. Worst trigger of any gun I've owned and don't miss it at all.

My first was a whitetail on my 20th birthday with my friend's dad's Remington 700 in 30-06.
It was a long time until I owned a gun as nice as that one.

A brand new Winchester model 70 XTR featherweight in .257 Roberts which I spent a year researching and saving for.

I took a Bighorn ewe for my first kill.

This rifle has since taken hundreds of deer and lots of elk, moose, sheep, buffalo, pronghorns, bears and assorted smaller stuff.
It is still my first choice rifle for most hunts.

1st big game kill was a whitetail doe with a model 70 featherweight 30-06 gifted to me from my father. 25 years ago but can still be there any time I close my eyes.

That rifle is on the "never sell" list.

Its the stainless version of my dads rifle. When he's done with his one will go to each of my boys.

WT buck with a milsurp SMLE 303 British. Hunted with it for another year, then sold it to a buddy for his first hunting rifle.

My first big game animal was a mulie doe that I shot with a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06. I think that was 1982, bought the rifle from the Canadian Tire in College Mall in Lethbridge. If I recall correctly, I was using Federal Premium ammo loaded with 165gr BTs.

Big sow brown phase black bear on the doorstep of the house when I was 12. Surprised I hit it with that old worn out 303 Brit.
