Default Trophy Brook Trout share/not

Morning all … just a question about a trophy mounted female Brook Trout

If you had a 29 1/2 inch female Brook Trout mounted

Would you give it away to your Provincal Museum or keep until you died?

I choose to give to ours(Provincal Museum)

Info on fish

June 28 1984 caught

Mounted by Don at 4 Season,s Taxidermy in the freeze dry state

Damaged on loan to Curries Guiding n repainted again by Don

Would you keep in your family or share

Just asking

David

I would share it with the stipulation it must be kept on display and not be put in the basement somewhere where no one can see it. Museums have the habit of storing more than they display.

Agree, then pass it on to a family member who enjoys fishing.

Funny thing about trophy fish mounts. Jasper Park Lodge has the Alberta Record Rainbow that the fisherman had mounted. Recollection was that JPL paid $5,000 to the guy.

Then there is the trophy Non Typical Mule Deer that created a family fight on the death of the hunter, ending up in about 1 month of Trial with Civil Contempt arrest and repatriation of the deer mount from the US collector who paid $100 K for it.

Alot of the new generation does not care, so family nostalgia may be meaningless.

But it may be something of value to an outfit like Cabellas, or you could get a VERY LARGE tax Receipt for the donation if you wanted.

Either way, it is an incredible fish and a beautiful job done on the mount.

Do what you think is right, ask your family members if someone wants it on your passing, and if you want to make a buck at it, no one will spite you for that.

Drewski

Don't have a fish mount, but sure enjoy my heads on the wall. An unintended PIA for my heirs. lol. I'll keep mine as long as I keep the fond memories associated.

It's been a while since I saw this fish for the 37th time. If it gets donated does that mean it will be even longer until the 38th time?

How does one go about contacting these companies/people interested in buying mounts? I have a 25 lb rainbow trout on my wall, mounted by Don P.

[QUOTE=Drewski Canuck;4610696]Funny thing about trophy fish mounts. Jasper Park Lodge has the Alberta Record Rainbow that the fisherman had mounted. Recollection was that JPL paid $5,000 to the guy.

This fish was caught in a closed lake and not Maligne. But hey great for tourism.

Nice fish but as for the question of keeping or sharing the choice comes down to how much I personally valued owning it.

Odds are I would never even know I caught a record because I don’t follow them closely enough and only keep big fish if they are not going to make it. I rarely weigh or take a measurement of a fish. Likely would just be another big fish I let go without even knowing where it stood

I know 2 records I have personally beat unofficially and didn’t know it till years later. There is 2 others that I very likely beat as well but the fish were only estimated. Very confident I have eaten a quill back rockfish that completely destroyed the record by 3lbs lol. I just don’t keep track of that stuff and it takes someone else telling me or getting me to look it up

If anyone wants to beat the northern pike minnow record I could send you to northern BC to visit my brother he knows a spot that you will beat it multiple times in a day lol. I think a lot of species like this people are just not registering their catches and don’t know the record.

Very cool to say you hold official records but I often question how often fishing records have been beaten unknowingly. I bet most fishermen have no clue what the record is for half the species they target

Of course popular species like brook trout and pike mentioned in this thread have a larger portion of fisherman keeping track/registering catches so definitely more of a feat to hold an official record

Either way great fish Speckel55 and something to be proud of regardless of the records

I went to the Reynolds Museum in Wetaskiwin on Saturday. They have a brook trout out of Maligne from 1954 caught by Stan Reynolds on display. When I saw it I immediately thought of this thread. Donate it to the Jasper Museum, with the stipulations Red suggested. That's what I would do.

I totally agree that perhaps MANY fishermen have caught MANY record fish and ate them either not knowing or not caring.

When I was a young teen, I watched some guys pull out a MASSIVE burbot out of the canal in McGregor. Was easily 25lbs - likely a few lbs more as the scale they were using bottomed out. That would have destroyed the old record (there was a new record of over 25lbs in 2015 out of peerless I think) but this one was 30+ years ago.

They skinned it and ate it. Shared it with us and some others around the bank there. Nice guys but I still shake my head to this day.
