I don't own a diesel, but I wonder if this would be worth the time and effort:

Remember Diesel is used by Trains, Tractor Trailers, Freighters, construction heavy equipment, etc. etc. etc., gas isn't.

That might cause problems with prices?

Beat me to it, higher demand = higher price. IMO
As OP said, seems to be early this year.

Diesel is the same as home heating fuel. It always goes up in Sept when people are filling their tanks for winter. I don't know why it doesn't go back down in the spring though. I'll be topping up with used turkey frying oil for the next little while.

Turkey frying oil almost sounds rare to me. Where would it be available in commercial quantities? Where would you be able to get say 100 gals of it? I don't want it but if it is not readily available how could you consider it an alternative? Not intending to to criticize anything you state I just don't know at all.

Not commerical quantities. Just buddies who deep fry turkeys this time of year and give the oil to me to dump into my ancient, non computer controlled diesel tanks. (Dodge Cummins and a couple Toyota Land Cruisers)

War speculation - the military runs on diesel.
Supply versus speculated demand.

Shell is starting there 60 day outage. Expect prices to go even higher as the inventory gets lower for western canada

It has been around 110 all summer high point of 115 and a low of .99 here. Currently sitting at 112.9 but with discount it's at 107.9!
Better than the 1.40 I paid in ontario this summer

Default Diesel prices

It is quite simple as the big refining companies would like you to believe, it is supply and demand. If you have total control over the supply you can demand whatever you like. Seems to be every couple of years the Petro Can refinery has some catastrophe that causes a shortage of diesel, (funny how that happens only in Alberta) usually right in front of a busy drilling season, also strange that as soon as the price gets up there to where they want it, all of a sudden there is a flood of fuel, never see the price go down though. And yes I do drive a diesel. Complain to the competition bureau? What competition? It is well orchestrated Highway robbery.
