Default Oddness in the sky last night

This isn't a tinfoil hat thread, I do not think aliens walk among us.

Nonetheless, I'm curious.

Went out on a quad trip last night and didn't get anywhere near home until just before midnight. Stopped to take a break in a field. Sky was super clear.

A little off what I think was polaris, so facing roughly N N E both of us saw something we hadn't before:

A star that would wink on and wink off about every 30-40 seconds. Nothing, blink on, then blink off. Seemed too high to be a satellite... and it wasn't moving, maybe something in geostationary orbit?

Any idea what it was, or if it's a star that normally does this?

Night before last it was around midnight in that direction I was seeing bright flashes. Some of them were pretty intense. Just about the time I would be ready give up looking I would see another one. They were different intensity's.

Two nights ago I saw something interesting too, just laying on my lounger on the desk with Incredigirl, looking at the stars, and took notice of one (it was twinkling/shimmering) and then suddenly it brightened up for a second, almost like a tiny camera flash.

At least now I know it was a weather baloon.
