Default Update: July 14th - Sylvan's Brutus

It must be Rut season, Brutus has been sniffin 5-6 lady friends in my back yard & the 18th Fairway of the Sylvan Lake G&CC.

This past spring there was 2 sets of twins and 1 single, he’s the King around here. Really a nice Mulie, he looks solid with a big neck, ….. any guess how old he may be ?

Hope he survives another season.

Cheers

D.

Taken in 2015, didn’t see him last year

The other day about 350 yds from the back door.

Val Geist has studies seem to suggest mulies get the largest racks at about 4 years, and they start atrophying after that.

Yup ... he spends about 2 weeks around here each season, getting braver or dumber, not sure, he was going down a back lane to Pier 7 just off Lakeshore Drive following a doe, such is love & I didn't have the camera. Put my trail cam out all I got was a fuzzy pic of his butt walking by checking out the bird feeder.

In 2015 he allowed me to get within 75 feet of him in the bush taking pic's, that was amazing.

Hey Zip-to-Zip .... it's a simple Panasonic Lumix with 20 x zoom and Adobe Photoshop's crop & enlarge feature does the rest.

Me thinks he been groomed by Santa when Rudolf retires, Brutus can pull a semi load of X-Mass stuff.

Zip, I'm looking at the antlers. Are you certain that's the same deer from the 2015 picture? Just seems like there is some differences between his front forks. Either way, holy hell. Thanks for posting!

The mulie looks like he should be in the PBR (pro bull riding) circuit. Well fed and rutted up. Probably a little rank tasting. I guess 5 or 6 years old. Great pics.

Great picture, nice to see the odd big one out breeding and not hanging on a wall. Go get some Brutus!

Brutus is the King of the Sylvan G&CC, haven't seen many Mulie buck's around here that would challenge him, he's got to be the same deer.

He looks bigger across the shoulders and he has no neck. He's all head/antlers solid body and butt/tail.

Was able to save a few 2015 pics of him & his lovely lady from Photobucket.

I spent a few hours walking slowly with them and they allowed me to get very-very close to take these.

How’s this for a close up ….

Finding the Big Game Season Dates in the regs took me a bit to figure out the codes.

Can someone confirm Sylvan is in 221 which is open for Mule Deer Antlered between Nov. 01 to 30th, 2017 ?

This means Brutus has to stay in hiding in my back yard for another 2 weeks or so to survive another season, then we can all wait to see if he returns next year.

What would be a normal life span if he stays healthy and doesn't become someone's trophy ?

Edit ... would love to find his shed's this spring, that would be an amazing trophy to hang my hat's or fishin rods on.

Tks fellas.

David

A healthy mulie can live to 12 or so years in the wild and longer in the Eden like conditions of a golf course.

He frequents the in-laws back yard too off Lakeshore and 52nd.
He walks but never runs the FIL says, likely because he’s near 380 lbs.

That's a block or so from me & closer to downtown, Brutus must of went to Booze store to get a nice bottle of french bubbly for this sweety-pie.

Hate to see him go down to someone's bumper...

Edit ... forward the F.I.L. the link, I'm sure he would enjoy the pic's.

He only spends the Rut season on the golf course, he does his duty and disappears until next season. It's a safe place for the does to hang out all year, and have their young, as there's very little to no predators on the course other than a lonely coyote on occasion. His territory must be the farm land around the lake area.

Would enjoy seeing him for the next 5-6 years & share him with others here.

Default Update - July 14, 2018

You may wish to go back & see a few of the first pics on this thread to appreciate the story.

Brutus did his thing last fall & I've been anxious to see how many does that live on the Sylvan golf course had fawns this spring. Last week we finally seen a doe/single and the other day a doe with twins and then I seen a doe cross the 18 fairway heading towards 53 Ave with 3 fawns, grabbed my camera & went for a walk and was able to get 1 pic of the smallest one before the doe & two others went deeper into the bush/grass.

Have any of you ever seen a doe with 3 fawns before , I imagine rare ?

Hope Brutus survived the winter will be watching for him this fall.

Cheers

d.

Zip-in-z, Pretty sure I have seen him this summer already. Feel free to message me as I think I know where he lives for most of the season. I also live in sylvan lake and like to keep tabs on the local wildlife. Thanks for the story and great pictures.
