Default Personal Best Northern Pike

I finally got a personal best pike after many years of drought and I got it on Camera!

I've fished this lake many times and had my previous personal best from it, but not even close to this one. Sometimes you fish all day and only catch one fish... well this is one of those days you're happy you were out on the water to the very end to pull in an incredible fish.

Great Pike Brandon ........ I also hook the herring head side down as well - and agree you get a better hook set that way. The only difference is I use large single hooks (in tandem) and a bead stop so I can thread the herring through and expose the entire tip and curve of the hook.

Congrats on that beauty. Going to be tough to beat that one. Hopefully you'll get her/him again in a few years.

What a fish. Wow.

So I have heard of laying the herring down on the bottom and leaving 20 feet of line for a jaw jacker to get a hook set and similarly for tip ups but for my luck so far (just starting targeting big pike) the hammer handles go after it and get caught which is still good fun.

In this set up, was your herring just hanging a few inches from bottom?

I only use a single gamakatsu (red) for ease of getting the hook out quick, and I don't think I lose too many more than when I used trebles, but way less headaches with the "surgery"

I 've started hooking the smelts further back too, with the one hook as I think it loooks different than the other smelts out there that are all horizontal or looking up, which likely is less natural in my thinking anyway.
I got a 43" 23lber doing it this way a few yrs back, and have a number of 15lbers too
peace

Oh sorry I thought I said it in the video. About 12 inches off the bottom.

Congrats on a great fish.As always the video is great. It must have been extra special to for you to get your biggest on video surrounded by good friends or family. You seem to always know where to go to get all the nice fish.My question is how deep were you fishing for him.It looks like you pulled up 40 ft of line. Thanks for posting and make sure you take me next time you head out.

Oh no this is a tip up with a spool of line, so when the fish takes the bait he can run with the line. So that would be 40 feet vertically not straight down. We were in shallow water less than 10 feet deep.

I have no issue with subsistence fishing. Fish are delicious.

I am so happy that you also believe a fish like that needs to go back to make more super massive fish.

My personal best is about the same size, except on a fly rod in Northern Saskatchewan, packed with aggression and a full belly, it was certainly more agressive. It pulled my canoe around the bay for about 10 minutes (OK, probably 5 minutes).

But since I have no pictures, it was at least twice as big...no...3 times bigger than that fish.

OK, it only pulled my canoe around a little. Maybe for 3 linear metres. It was still awesome.
