Default Kananaskis Upper and Lower lakes

Hey guys,

My friends and I are planning a guys camping weekend in late August at the Interlakes campground to do some fishing and catching up.

We will be shore fishing, I don't have a fly fishing set up, and I've noticed alot of the lakes near there have Zero keep regulations other than the Upper and Lower which you can keep 1 trout.

Do you guys have any other places I could try out that the regulations have shut down within about an hour of the Interlakes campground? We don't mind a bit of hiking to get to a lake.

Looking for trout or whitefish.

You can hike in to Elbow Lake and catch and keep Brook trout.

Bring bear spray. There's a bear warning for all of K-Country and some areas are closed.

You could try Spray Lakes for whitefish, but a boat might be necessary. Rawson and Sparrow's Egg are close to the Interlakes area, but be sure to check the regs.

It would all depend on how far you would want to hike to get to the lake, most of the areas in the park are protected with less retention but there is goat and grotto that have fish.

I would make sure to check to see about the bear situation in the area though, both goat pond and your campground are I think closed due to bear activity.

Best of luck

Just came back from there on Monday after spending the weekend camping at Interlakes. The beach by the power house and most of the bike/hiking trails are all closed do to bear issues. We seen 6 grizzlies in the area over the 3 days. They were never a nuisance to anyone, just minding their own business...just need to be smart out there is all.

I set up a trail cam just behind our campsite and got a few pics:

Goat pond is maybe a half hour drive up the smith-Dorian just past spray lakes. Was out there last week and caught quite a few small whites and cuts. I just casted out a dry fly with a float on my spin rod and did a slow retrieve. There was quite a bit of action where the pond flows into the canal. The road will cross a bridge over a canal and that is goat right there. There are no special regs for goat pond so the general ES1 regs apply for limits.
