Usually get an elk with the bow and don’t need the meat so I look for a bigger one than I have already and don’t always meet that goal.

Now that 2 of my kids hunt.... it’s pretty sporadic. My meat buck this year was the first white tail I’ve shot in 5 years I think.

We’ve been filling the freezer more and more with elk instead.

I wasn’t in a panick for meat this year so I let a decent buck walk away in the hopes of a bigger one. He didn’t show up and I’m fine with that.

My last whitetail buck was in 2014. The next year I was down and out with battling cancer, then my wife and I were forced to leave Ft. McMurray following the fire event of May 2016. We've since relocated to Ontario and I managed to get out with one of my adult sons in 2017, didn't see a buck. Last year I couldn't hunt due to working a contract position and having to be in Ft. McMurray dealing with our house located there (we got the repairs done and rented it out). This year I was looking forward to going with my son again, but then he got deployed (he's CAF), so I couldn't go to the camp he goes to. He's home again so I'm hoping to maybe get out for a few days yet (crossbow) if we can locate a place in a WMU where the season ends on Dec 31. Otherwise it'll be next fall before I try again (I'm hoping to buy my own property in 2020).

Fill my tag most years, busy in the fall so not overly picky. Depends on elk & Muley success also. Got a neat buck this year, my son was there so it was extra special.

2 years, and we don't usually pass on any buck. Pass on a doe early season, but come November couldn't get a doe or buck..

I live in northern AB and we have a lot of whitey's in the area so I fill my tag every year. Or at least I've managed to every year since I moved here in 2005. Who knows what next year will hold!?!?

It's worth noting that I hunt for meat, not trophies. The 3 deer in my freezer right now will all be gone by next November.

Some years I get lucky and get a buck with a nice rack (got two hanging on the wall) but I rarely look at the antlers beyond making sure it's a whitey. I check out the antlers after it's laying down.........lol

I guess a lot depends on where you hunt.........and whether you hunt for meat or trophies.

Only one year so far where I have not filled a whitetail tag and that was because my season was cut short due to an injury. I hunt for meat, not horns so Im more likely to pass on the bigger racks anyways if the deer looks like it will be tough meat.
If I ever get drawn for moose or elk then there is a chance the whitetail tag will not get used if the freezer is full. Although I might fill it anyways and donate the meat since there is always someone in need. Someone was nice enough to donate some meat to me when I was injured so it would be nice to pay it forward.

Thumbs up

2013=180”er
2014=NO BUCK
2015=170”er
2016=190”er
2017=180”er
2018=145”er
2019=160”er

Besides the 2018 ground shrinkage incident this decade of whitetail hunting had been very successful.

Shoot a 150-160 every season and see probably 50 bucks I could shoot. Like fish in a barrel. Girlfriend and boy and I are normally pretty picky with the amount of deer seen daily. Have never not shot a whitetail

Default wt buck

Last tag i filled was in 2013. Hunted hard fro 15 days this season passed on 10 150 class bucks but couldn't fill the tag even with my sone with me on some of those days. It was great to show him that you don't have to fill your tag to have a successful season. Wish more guys would let the whitetail population grow and the bucks grow to a mature size instead of just filling a tag. But those are just my beliefs...

Default Type of deer I pass on.

Here is a prime example of a 160 (4-1/2yr old) class deer I passed on. I passed on this buck on November 19th. November 20th I ended up shooting either his daddy or older brother, who was about 40” bigger. In 2 years I’ll be willing to bet this deer is in the 220”-240” range.

That’s exactly the way to do it, it takes a solid man to pass a buck like that, shows a lot about your character, good on you

Good on you guys. My son in law had an antlered mule deer tag this fall, and has never shot a muley buck. We passed on a bunch of very nice bucks because we didn’t need the meat. He shot his first moose earlier on. We had a blast looking for a monster, and didn’t regret passing on any of the great bucks we saw.

I’d Kill that buck in a heart beat unless it was further than my self imposed max range or if it was on land I did not have permission on- then I wouldn't care if it was the biggest buck in existence - it would be a hard pass in my books .
