Springtime is the best time to cut them when you cut one make sure you take two or three cuz you'll probably kill the tree

Yes it kills the tree... so might as well take the tree for firewood too.

Leave it on the tree until you know when you are going to strike out on the project. The point is, do not let it dry out or it will become unusable.

Seen lots of 2 ft diameter birch trees with large slabs eaten off by porcupines. Trees still going strong. Most trees can handle moose call.

I've made four or five of them over the years I just soak them in the bathtub and then wrap them around a 2 litre pop bottle

If you just remove the outer bark the tree can survive. If you take the inner bark the tree dies. Inner bark looks like cork.

porqupines do eat birch bark, but still only on one side. The sap can still travel up the tree in it's vertical path on the side that's uninterrupted. What kills the tree is taking a ring of bank off all the way around. We used to do a couple quick rings around the base of big Aldar trees on Haida Gwaii for next seasons firewood. This killed the tree and left it standing so it dried in the wet climate. Taking just the outer layer off can let the tree live, but the risk of disease and bugs goes up quite drastically. When harvesting for a moose call you usually get the biggest piece you can by going all the way around the tree. Even if it's only 1" wide. it'll kill the tree. So might as well get enough to make sure you make a nice call. A couple practise pieces.

I have used birch rolls before but I hate carrying them around. Tried a bleach bottle with the bottom cut off. Lighter, crushable to stuff in a pack, sounds good to the moose, even the brush raking sounds good.

I've tried all kinds over 20 years of guiding I like the birch bark as far as being an original idea the hunters usually liked it to compared to a coffee can or a plastic call but they all work

Water based varathane. I admit to overdoing it somewhat, sits as a decoration more than it was ever used. I prefer to just use my hands over carrying the birchbark call around with me.
